Chapter 10~ Counting Stars
Ryder's POV
I sat in the studio room plucking at the strings on my guitar to prepare for my gig that was only a few minutes later. It was my birthday and I couldn't imagine a better way to spend it. I didn't want to throw a party, so I invited everyone to the performance.
"Two minutes till show time, sweetie. Go on backstage," the stage manager told me. I have her a small nod and smile and followed her out, still clutching the guitar in my hands.
I stepped onto the stage with Ella behind the closed curtains and gave her a smile. The curtains opened and I said into my microphone, "Hello, everyone! Im glad you could make it tonight!"
Ella cut me off, "Today's a very special concert for you guys. Today is Ryder's birthday! So I discussed it with the band, and I think our first song should be sang by the birthday girl!" I gave her a nervous look- I had never performed without her. The crowd cheered in approval. She gave me a reassuring nod and walked over to me and said, "I think you should sing Counting Stars by One Republic. I heard you sing it in the shower."
I gave her a nod and she went to tell the band. The music started and a blinding spotlight focused on me. I took a nervous breath and began.
"Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard,
Said, no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars, yeah we'll be counting stars" I began quietly and steadily.
"I see this life like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
And my face is flashing signs
Seek it out and you shall find
Old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
I don't think the world is sold
I'm just doing what we're told
I feel something so right
Doing the wrong thing
I feel something so wrong
Doing the right thing
I could lie, coudn't I, could lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive," I continued, picking up the tempo and began to loosen up.
"Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard,
Said, no more counting dollars
We'll be counting stars
Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I've been, I've been praying hard,
Said, no more counting dollars
We'll be, we'll be counting stars
I feel the love and I feel it burn
Down this river, every turn
Hope is a four-letter word
Make that money, watch it burn
Old, but I'm not that old
Young, but I'm not that bold
