Beep! Beep! My phone buzzed indicating a new text. I picked it up from the bedside table and unlocked it to see a text from Aiden. A smile crept its way onto my lips as I read the text.
‘Come outside – Aiden’
I checked the time to see it’s just ten minutes past eight. I sent him a reply saying that I would be there in a minute and quickly changed into a white t-shirt and black leggings. I grabbed my purse and made my way downstairs. “Mom, I am going out. I will be back before ten,” I called out to her. I didn’t wait for her reply and walked towards the door.
Cold wind hit my face when I opened the door and stepped outside. I ignored the chill and walked towards the tall figure standing near the fence. I smiled a bit when I took in his appearance. He managed to look handsome as always, his messy light brown hair ruffling in the wind. He’s wearing a pair of faded blue jeans with a black t-shirt and a leather jacket over it. He was texting someone on his phone when I approached him, a deep frown plastered on his handsome face.
“Hey,” I said.
“Hey,” he smiled and gave me a quick peck. “Let’s go for a walk. Shall we?”
“Sure,” I shrugged. “Are you okay?”
He nodded and grabbed my hand. We walked towards the nearby park in silence. It was not a comfortable silence and I had a weird feeling that something was wrong. I looked at his face to see him deep in thought and shaking his head furiously at times.
The small park had a quaint atmosphere at night with its many big trees, small fountain and playground. The place was almost deserted, with very few people here and there. I shivered slightly as we took a seat on one of the benches.
“Feeling cold?” he asked. I nodded. Aiden took off his jacket and wrapped it around my shoulders.
“Here, take this,” he smiled kindly.
I shook my head, “No, you will be cold.”
“I will be fine,” he assured me. I mumbled my thanks and wrapped the jacket around me tighter. We sat there in silence for few minutes; an awkward tension filled the air and I was starting to feel uneasy. I glanced at Aiden, but he was lost in his own thoughts. Something was bothering him, I could see that. I had never seen him so gloomy, so whatever that was going on in his head was something big.
“We need to talk,” he suddenly blurted out, interrupting my thoughts.
“Are you breaking up with me?” I asked him teasingly, trying to ease the tension. My voice cracked a bit, despite my efforts to act nonchalant. I had a sick feeling that I was not going to like this ’talk’, that it was going to affect our relationship. He looked taken aback for a second, surprised by my question.
”What do you mean?” he inquired, his eyebrows furrowed.
