The day started off as it usually did. Shit. My nutcase mother came upstairs banging on the door. "Get the fuck up Kate"
My mother, Liz, was a very selfish woman. She cared only for herself. She didn't want anything to do with me really. I reminded her of my father. They constantly argued, every day and every night. My father eventually moved out after Liz got to breaking point with him and threw a knife at him. It didn't do him any damage but after that night he refused to come anywhere near our family again, so yeah I haven't seen him in about 2 years. I call my mother Liz because I don't feel like she is worthy enough to be called 'Mum' because she isn't a motherly figure. Everyday she shouts and screams at me and wants to cause arguments. She never lets me leave the house, apart from school. Quite often she packs her bags and leaves for a few days at a time, with no note or anything to let me know where she has gone. Liz often reminds me I am a burden to her and a huge pain in the arse.  So yeah I don't like being at home at all. I hate home and I hate school.

I pulled on a black jumper and a pair of black jeans and headed out. I passed Liz in the living room sat on the sofa with 3 bottles of beer. It was 8:45am and she was drinking already. I needed to leave this house as soon as possible.

I had double music on the morning which I was really looking forward to. I could talk to Van for two whole hours. Great.  By the time I got to class Van was already sat down scribbling in the same notebook as yesterday.

"Hey Van. Where did you go yesterday?" I asked.

"Morning, I left for rehearsals, band practice y'know" he replied.

Music itself was a bore but for the full 2 hours Van and I chatted about what felt like everything. We talked about music, family, and the band.  Soon everyone started to leave the class. Was it over already?

Van and I packed up our things and headed out together. Stood outside was Tilly, the mean blonde from yesterday.

"Oh hey Kate, what's in here?" She said as she snatched the bag off my back. She poured all of its contents on the floor, and kicked them about. "Oops" she sniggered as she walked off laughing.

"Fuck right off Tilly you prick!" Van shouted down the corridor at her. He helped to pick up my books from the floor. "Kathleen" he read off the front of one of them. "Who's Kathleen?"

"Thats me," I said blushing. "I hate Kathleen so thats why I go with Kate"

"I like it. Kathleen Octon" Van said. We sat on the floor in the corridor for another 10 minutes chatting when a small boy with long brown hair and a colourful bandana came over.

"VAN WHERE THE FUCK HAVE YOU BEEN?"  He shouted.

"Just up here," Van shouted back.
"Thats Larry, he's like my best mate" Van whispered to me. "Larry this is Kathleen or Kate" Van said as he introduced me to Larry.

"Hiya Kate. I'm sorry about Van keeping you for a while" Larry said while pulling Van up from the floor. "He tends to lose track of time when he is talking to someone he likes." I started to blush.

Van laughed and pushed Larry's shoulder playfully. "See ya in a bit Kate, we're just off for a bit of lunch" He said, as him and Larry walked off into the distance.
