The castle held a solemn ceremony to honour the deaths of the people in the army and the people who simply worked loyally to Gintoki and Tsukuyo. The kingdom fell into a long phase of depression, the extended feeling of bereavement in their hearts for the people they couldn't save.
"Hime."
Her heartbeat fluctuates at his voice, his rough baritone loud and clear in her ear.
"Come in."
He enters her bedroom and walks up to her. His eyes were strangely sunken, and with a life-shattering epiphany, she realized that he cried too. He, a sadistic knight, mourned the deaths of people he probably didn't even know the names of.
"Sad-"
He halts her words with a hug. His sinewy arms wound tightly around her smaller frame. With a surge of sadness, hysteric sobs bubbled in her throat and she grasped at him for comfort; he calmly took in her cries.
"He was my brother," she choked out, "my own blood murdered my family."
"Don't you dare call him your brother," he said, not harshly. "Don't you dare, Kagura." He planted a short kiss on her forehead. Her eyes widened, transfixed.
     "Sadist, did you just-"
"I was terrified," he said, alto lilt just above a whisper. He positioned his head at the crook of her neck and nuzzled it. "I was scared I'd lose you. You were running too far ahead of me, idiot. Why would you do that? Don't you know how much those guys were terrorizing us? They kidnaped you, they tried to brainwash me, then they killed-" his voice weakened, "-they killed so many people."
Her eyes widened, clutching his arms desperately.
"Sadist... No, Sougo-"
"It's all okay now, though," he reassured, "I won't leave you in a state of dejection. Forget anything I've said up until this point, Hime. Unnecessary and burdening feelings won't be in the equation. I'll protect you professionally, and I promise-"
She pressed her lips against his in a soothing kiss, forcing him into a world of ecstatic delirium and sheer disbelief. He blinked several times, comprehending her actions in a rough swallow.
"Did-did you just..."
"Shut up," she sniffed, "I'm in bad condition right now."
"But you kissed me. I thought you hated me. Ah, you indecisive-"
"Idiot," she whispered, her voice imbued with an air of solemnity, unprecedented and sudden. "I mourned your absence when we first met, I could barely breathe when I go to your room surreptitiously at night or when you suddenly invade my personal space. I thought I was contaminated with heart sickness when you told me you sneaked a covetous kiss when I fell ill. And when you finally arrived to save me, I had to make sure my chest wasn't pounding off into oblivion. So, you stupid, mangy piece of garbage, I hope you finally digested the fact that I like you. Because obviously I-"
He hooked an arm around her and drew her towards him, kissing her with a clear conscience knowing that it was consensual.
"I won't make you depressed. I'll make you forget the people who died."
"That'll be hard," she coughed, wiping her eyes on his chest.
...
But, alas, she did.
     "Sadist."
"Yes, Hime, are you sure you're ready to reveal your ghastly face, Hime? Shall I mask my eyes, Hime?"
She kicked his shin.
     "Unecessary."
Shinpachi sighed, rocking the hefty umbrella around as they walked. "They can't even behave at their own wedding."
Otae, Kyuubei, Sarutobi, and Otose followed suit, Tsukuyo and Gintoki fruitlessly masquerading their sorrow and happiness. Kondo and Hijikata led the army and the court ladies and the butlers.
"What a delightful exordium to married life," Otae commented, fawning over the musical and flower titivations to the room. The ceremony began.
