Walk With You

Prologue

Nico was holding Magee's hand, his six-year old sister, who's enjoying her ice cream in a cone while they were walking along the street of their Grandparents' village. Sa lolo at lola muna sila pansamantalang iniwan ng Mama at Papa nila dahil may aasikasuhin daw ang mga ito. Sa kanya muna pinabantayan ang kapatid hanggang sa mag-aya ito sa plaza ng village. He couldn't say no to his sister, aside from her persuasiveness with a bit of naughtiness, and talaga namang nabo-boring siya sa bahay ng lolo't lola, he also wanted to go to plaza because of a certain someone. You may ask how old is he at this time, he was 12, still undergoing in the stage of adolescence. He couldn't hide the fact na nagkaka-crush na siya sa mga babaeng kaedaran niya. Normal as it should be.

And when they finally reached the plaza, agad na bumitaw ang kapatid at nagtatatakbo papunta sa playground. "'Wag kang lalayo!" bilin niya dito. Like the typical six-year old, his sister is as jolly as anyone expected her to be. Bibo ang kapatid, at medyo maligalig. Pero the thing he liked about his sis is that Maggy is a clever kid. Madaling matuto at pagbilinan despite of her young age. He took one last glance over his sister as he dealt with his own. As for him, he heard a girl's laughter with full of glee. And when he turns around, there he saw Kristina, a girl with braces. The very person why he always wanted to go to their Grandparent's house even though he tends to get bored easily. And that is just to see her. He likes her. And today, he made sure he would not just gawk but he would definitely talk to her. And looks like he won't gonna fail this time. He immediately followed Kristina and her friends as they settled on one of the swing house near the main plaza. He introduced himself to her and noticed that her circle of friends was trying to hide their smiles on their faces. Kristina, on the other hand, was blushing. Hindi niya alam kung paano pa siya nakakatayo sa sobrang hiya, but thank goodness Kristina was so kind, she let him seat beside her. Kinilig naman siya dun. ^___^ Minutes later, they were having a good laugh like Nico was a long time friend.

Nico was so engrossed having chitchat with his new-found friends that he forgot about his sister.

Magee was having a time of her life. As a child, she has nothing to worry much about the world, just fun. And that was what she's doing at the moment. Her Kuya forgot her, so was she. She slides here, climbed up there, swings herself out, and took the seesaw with some of the children she didn't know but because they were just a kid, it doesn't matter. Until she saw a puppy running 'round the slide. The puppy caught her curiosity and finds it cute, Magee followed the puppy. Nakuha pa niyang makipaghabulan sa aso. "Gotcha! Hahahaha!" she laughed as she took the puppy on her arms. She kept on combing his fur, buti na lang mabait ang tuta at gusto rin siya nito. Hindi nagtagal ay nakarating siya sa isang bahay kung saan naghihintay ang isang babae who happens to be the pet owner.

"Is this your dog po?" she asked cheerfully to the woman.

"Well yes, sweetie. Thank you for bringing Lulou back." The woman answered, also finding Magee a sweet girl. Then finally carrying the puppy, she whispers with glee, "Naughty dog."

"Hihihi! You're welcome. So Lulou's your name pala," she said on the puppy.

"Oh yes. How about you darling, what's your name?"

"I'm Magee po."

"Who's with you? Wala ka bang kasamang matanda?" the woman worried. Hindi maiwasan, lalo't bata pa si Maggy at mukhang nag-iisa.

"I'm with my Kuya Nico po. He's in the plaza," then she remembered her kuya's bilin, "Oh no! I have to go na po. Kuya will get mad at me. Sabi po niya doon lang ako eh."

"Okay. Ingat ka ha. Bye!"

"Ba-bye!" she said as she waved the woman and the puppy good-bye.

Magee ran as fast as she could when she didn't notice a small delivery truck coming directly along her way. And since hindi pa siya masyadong nakakalayo sa bahay na pinanggalingan, the woman saw everything. The moment the truck's driver tried to hit the break, ang mabilisang paglingon ng bata sa narinig na ingay ng gulong at sa pagpilit na gumilid para hindi masagasaan, hanggang sa mahuli ang isang paa nito sa pagtakbo ay nahagip pa rin ito ng gulong bago maikambyo ng driver sa kabilang direksyon ang sasakyan. All those scenes happened so fast like a blink of an eye.

Meanwhile, Nico and his new-found friends were clueless of what happened in the other block. Until they saw a group of people running towards there. They heard a teenager boy shouted, "Hoy, may naaksidente daw na bata doon sa kabilang kalye. Tara puntahan natin!" Nico's eyes immediately search for his sister, finding no Magee to approach. That was the time his heart skipped a beat. Oh God.

Halos lumipad na siya makarating lang sa kabilang kalye in the fastest possible time only to find a stopped deliver truck, mga taong may pinapalibutan na hindi niya alam kung ano or sino. Bilang maliit pa ang katawan, Nico found a way to see what people were having their interest about. There he saw his sister lying on the ground with a blood spilled over her body.

He didn't know what happened today would change his sister's life forever.

He wanted to scream.
