"Alright kid we're here." A gruff voice called as they pulled the girl out of the car. The man, a middle aged creature with a large pot belly and a wig poorly placed on his head, lead her by the shoulder to a large looming five story building. Once inside she was met with the smell of smoke, rotting food, and the strange metallic stench of blood.
"Here?" Kaliyah asked wrinkling up her nose.
The man glanced at her in annoyance, "Just shut up kid, and it will all go faster."
She rolled her eyes, but followed the man through a maze of corridors. The walls were a steal gray that blended into the ceiling and floor. It was a never ending vortex of gray. The only color to be found was them, the man in his strange black and red uniform, and Kaliyah in her brown ragged shirt and black ripped shorts.
The man, who she dubbed as Sir Butt, lead her into a poorly lit room that only had one chair, which was occupied, and a messy desk covered in papers. Sir Butt nodded to the woman behind the desk and left, closing the door behind him with a gentle click.
The lady stood up, allowing Kaliyah to see her short, chubby frame which was covered in a blood red material that contrasted with her paper white hair and black eyes. She smiled at Kaliyah and gestured her forward, "Miss, how nice of you to join me this evening."
Well it's not like she had a choice, Kaliyah thought bitterly, "Who are you?"
"Why I am the Mistress here." She replied with a small laugh.
"That doesn't answer my question."
Her forcade fell for a second as her annoyance at the question showed on her face, but soon her smile was back, "Darling, that is all you need to know."
This angered the small girl, sure life with her mother wasn't the best, but she'd be damned if she was going to let them pull her out of the life she had known without answers, "Is this about my eyes?"
"Somewhat, but that is not the point right now, right now all you have to do is answer some of my questions."
"I already answered questions."
The Mistress sighed, "I know dear, but I need to ask you a few more."
Kaliyah glared at her, "Take me home!"
She made a tsking sound and looked at the young girl as if she was disappointed, "Sweetheart, this is your new home, if you answer my questions correctly."
"And if I don't answer them correctly?"
That smile found it's way back onto her face, but this time it looked more cruel, "You are a smart little girl, I think you know what will happen."
Of course Kaliyah knew what would happen, it was every day news, people killed for lying about having the 'power', but what did that have to do with her? She never said she had a power, she never even said that she wanted one. Nothing about her was special.
"Now sweetie, let's get started shall we? First off what is your full name?"
Kaliyah hesitated, "Kaliyah Knox."
"Very good," She went over to her desk and wrote something down on a slip of paper, "Now how old are you?"
"Twelve."
"And who do you live with?"
What did this have to do with anything? "My mother."
"Oh? What happened to your father?" Kaliyah didn't answer, this seemed to anger the Mistress, "Dear, what happened to your father?"
"He died." She spat.
"How did he die?" The Mistress pushed.
Kaliyah glared at the short woman, clenching her fists, "He was killed."
"And do you know how he was killed?"
"Mother said it was because I was cursed." Kaliyah replied, not wanting to tell her everything, after all she didn't truly know what happened, but she had her suspicions.
This seemed to please her, "Now dear, has anything weird happened to you?"
Weird? Sure weird things have happened, like that guy who jumped off a building and when he hit the ground he disappeared like he was never there, or that lady who Kaliyah always saw walking her dog and one day she was found dead in her front lawn without a head. But she was sure that wasn't what the Mistress ment. So she shrugged, "No."
Again she turned back to her paper and scribbled some things down, "One last thing sweetie, will you please show me your power."
It wasn't a question. But what power? Kaliyah had no power. Sure her father used to say her eyes were a gift from God and one day it would save them, but that never happened. That idea died along with him. So how was she supposed to show the Mistress her 'power' when she had none? "Mistress, I do not have any power."
Her eyes narrowed and her face curled into a snarl, "You don't have a power? Then what are those eyes of yours?"
"They are just my eyes."
She laughed, a cold and spine chilling laugh, "Dear, nothing is as simple as that in this world. Now I want you to show me your power."
The plain black eyes of the Mistress flashed a crimson red, and that's the last thing Kaliyah saw.
