Back To School

I went back to school two weeks later, once break was over. No one knew what had happened over break, not even Marley. I went through the day pretty easily. I ate lunch today, because I had a doctors appointment where I was getting my medication and a physical. I was nervous though, because after school I was auditioning for Glee Club.

"What song are you going to do?" Marley asks me during lunch.

"Homeward Bound by Simon and Garfunkle." Marley smiles.

"Cool, but I was thinking over break, what if you did a song you wrote? You told me you have some." I shake my head.

"No. I'd be way too embarrassed." I say, taking a bite of my salad.

"No, they're all so accepting. Please. How about you skip gym next hour and come to the auditorium with me. I'll listen to them and tell you what I think?" Marley asks. I think about it for a while before finally nodding my head.

I stand in the auditorium, recognizing the familiar features from this afternoon when Marley and I practiced, and she heard some of my own songs. Everyone in the Glee Club is sitting in the front few rows, all of them giving me encouraging looks and smiles. I recognize most of them from Kevin's house.

"Okay, guys, this is Demi Lovato, auditioning for Glee Club with... Homeward Bound by Simon and Garfunkle." Mr. Schuester says, sitting down next to Kitty in the front row.

"Um, actually, if it's okay I'd like to do a song I wrote?" A few people look at each other, and some whisper to one another.

"Yeah that's fine." Mr. Schue smiles at me. I nod and walk over to the piano, sitting down and placing my trembling fingers over the keys.

"Uh, it's called In Case." I begin to play.

Pictures in my pocket

Are faded from the washer

I can barely just make out your face

Food you saved for later

In my refrigerator

It's been too long since later never came

I know

One day eventually

Yeah, I know

One day I'll have to let it all go

But I keep it just in case

Yeah, I keep it just in case

In case

You don't find what you're looking for

In case

You're missing what you had before

In case

You change your mind, I'll be waiting here

In case

You just want to come home

Strong enough to leave you

But weak enough to need you

Cared enough to let you walk away

I took that dirty jacket

From the trash right where you left it

'Cause I couldn't stand to see it go to waste
