Luke held my hand as we walked down the hall together, heading towards the exit. School had ended, meaning it was now time for him to go to the locker room to get ready for the big game tonight. With each step, each second he held my hand in his, each time he looked down at me with obvious affection in his eyes, I felt another stab in my heart from the guilt. We weren't even an official couple, and yet I felt like I'd made the ultimate betrayal.
We stopped suddenly, and I looked up at him surprised for a moment until I realized we were already at the doors leading to the locker room. Luke gave me that sexy grin I always liked, and I tried my best to smile back without letting on how shameful I felt.
He raised his hand then and brushed his fingertips along my cheek. I stiffened and closed my eyes at the feeling; as amazing as his touch was, it felt so wrong to allow him to touch me like that knowing he wasn't the only one whose touch I craved.
Geez, how messed up did that sound?
"You'll be watching me tonight?" he asked then, staring up at me hopefully with those navy eyes of his.
I smiled back at him reassuringly. "Of course! I've got my sign ready and everything—number forty-two, woo!"
The last part came out more enthusiastic than I'd intended, but it was more to mask the sense of dread I was really feeling. Football games and I never really worked out; there's a reason I never really went to them in the first place.
He smiled at me then before responding, "Good, then I'll be looking for you in the stands."
"That shouldn't be too hard," I replied nonchalantly, "just look for the dorky girl holding the sign with your number."
Luke chuckled, the deep sound resonating from his chest. "Alright, I'll be sure to look for the beautiful girl holding up the sign with my number on it."
I smiled at him, the adoration I felt for him I'm sure radiating from it. I really didn't deserve this guy.
"I'll see you," he suddenly said, and he lifted my hand to softly press his lips against them, causing my heart to flutter. And constrict.
"Yeah," I whispered, and with that he gave me one final grin before heading through the doors to the locker room.
God damnit, how was I going to confess to him now?
I stood there and stared at the spot Luke had just passed through as the thoughts reeled through my mind. How long could I handle keeping the truth from him? When was a good time to tell him?
Most importantly, what would he do when I told him?
I didn't know how long I stood there thinking these things over and over again; I was so distracted by the recurring thoughts that I didn't even realize when the door opened and came inches away from hitting me in the face. Thankfully whoever it was that opened the door reacted in time to stop it from causing any damage, but just barely. Too stunned to speak, I simply stood there; however, I found that I didn't even need to say anything at all for whoever was on the other side immediately spoke.
"Holy shit, I'm so—"
He stopped immediately after he made eye contact with me, however, and as soon as I registered who those eyes belonged to I stopped breathing. Lo and behold, on the other side of the door was, of course—
