Annabeth POV

Percy and Gaea were battling mercilessly and bloodily. Percy was in bad shape; he was visibly exhausted and could barely keep himself upright, and his arm was bleeding so badly he was holding Riptide left-handed. Annabeth had her dagger drawn. She wanted to help, she really did, but she couldn’t move. She was frozen to the spot, the Olympian soil holding her feet in place.

Suddenly hundreds of Earthborn emerged from the dirt beneath her. Percy turned away from Gaea and charged toward her. She threw her hands up to protect her face from the six-armed monsters, but the blow never came. She lowered her hands just in time to see clay flying everywhere and the glint of Percy’s celestial bronze sword. Gaea screamed in rage and she watched those brilliant green eyes she loved so much growing farther and farther from her as Percy was dragged away by an enraged Gaea. Now that he knew Annabeth’s life was at stake, Percy was fighting more ferociously than ever before.

Percy slashed his sword at the earth goddess’s head, but Gaea dodged and deflected the blade, spinning to make her own attack. She swiped at Percy’s feet. Percy cried out, stumbled, and lost his balance for a moment, before whirling around and stabbing Gaea in a chink in her stone armor.

Gaea shrieked with rage. She lifted her sword. She feinted a strike, and just as Percy sidestepped, she grabbed him. She pinned Percy’s arms to his sides and drove the sword through Percy’s chest.

Percy screamed in agony as the blade tore through his chest and the tip emerged from his back. He collapsed onto the ground. Gaea walked away and left him there to die, gasping and moaning in pain.

Student POV

The school was snowed in. It really sucked. The teachers decided to have the boys sleep in the cafeteria and the girls sleep in the gymnasium, which were at opposite ends of the school.

Sophie lay awake, staring at the high ceiling. The waxed floor was so hard she couldn’t sleep. Besides, even though the heater was on full blast, she was freezing. When the teachers had made everyone go to bed, they had asked who would be okay without blankets, as they had not been prepared to have over six hundred students overnight. Sophie had given up her blanket so there would be more for everyone else. Now she was seriously regretting her decisions.

Then she heard Annabeth’s voice next to her. At first Sophie thought she was trying to start a conversation. She shushed her, not wanting to get in trouble. Then she heard what Annabeth was saying.

“Percy. Percy, no. Percy. No, no, no, no, no, no. Percy! Percy! No, Percy, no!” It started with soft muttering, but in a matter of seconds, the girl was screaming, tears streaming down her face.

“Annabeth,” Sophie hissed, trying to wake her friend. “Annabeth! Wake up!”

“Percy!” Sophie had never known Annabeth to scream (except when confronted with a spider), but now a blood curdler tore itself from the poor girl’s throat. “Percy, no! Please, no, please! Percy! Percy! Percy! No!”

A teacher rushed over to Annabeth and tried to wake her up, but she wouldn't respond.

“Percy!” Annabeth sobbed.

“Who's Percy?” The teacher asked.

Another scream echoed through the cavernous room.

“Her boyfriend,” Sophie said. “A guy named Percy Jackson.”

Teacher POV

Percy Jackson. James walked quickly down the hall, trying to get to the cafeteria as fast as his sleepy legs would carry him. Percy Jackson. He repeated that name over and over in his mind so he wouldn’t forget.

Poor girl. No one should be having nightmares like that.

He pushed open the cafeteria door.

“Mary,” he said, loud enough to get his colleague’s attention, but not loud enough to wake any of the students. “Do you know a student named Percy Jackson?”

Mary nodded. “He’s in my third period. Why?”

“His girlfriend's having a nightmare. We can’t wake her up.”

Mary nodded again, stood up, and tiptoed her way through hundreds of sleeping teenagers until she reached a tall, skinny boy with a gray streak in his black hair. When she shook him awake, James saw alarmingly bright green eyes staring through the darkness.

Mary whispered something James couldn’t hear, and then Percy sat up so fast that at first James thought the boy had hurt his back. Percy threw the blanket off his body and scrambled off the floor.

Percy POV

Percy was at Camp, playing Capture the Flag. He and Annabeth were the respective captains of each team, and right now they were in an all-out battle. This was no longer Capture the Flag—for every other camper it was a game of Who Can Drag Their Attention Away From the Two Fiercely Dueling Demigods Who Know Each Other’s Moves Too Well For a Short Quick Match Enough to Recover Their Senses and Steal the Opposing Team’s Flag While Everyone Else Continued Watching. As it usually is.

Suddenly, he was pulled out of his dream by Mrs. Carmichael shaking him awake.

“Hmm? What time is it?” Percy yawned.

“Your girlfriend’s having a nightmare.”

Percy's eyes shot open. He yanked the thin blanket off his body and stood up, now wide awake. He bolted out of the cafeteria, pushing past a teacher, and sprinted down the long hallway to get to Annabeth. His bare feet were freezing against the dirty tile and he almost lost his balance rounding a corner, but he made it across the school in less than ten seconds.

Percy threw open the doors to the gym and was immediately met with the echo of a shrill scream. He scanned row after row of sleeping girls until he spotted Annabeth’s curly blond hair.

When he knelt beside her, she was still screaming, her cheeks damp with tears. He scooped her up in his arms, blanket and all, and carried her to an unoccupied corner if the gym. He sat down, adjusted the blanket so she’d be warm, and held her like a baby. He tried to calm her. He smoothed her hair and muttered in her ear.

“Shh, shh, it’s okay. Annabeth, shh, it's okay. Wake up, Wise Girl. It’s just a dream. It’s just a nightmare. Shh it’s okay. Wake up. Shh. It’s alright, Wise Girl. Annabeth, wake up.”

Soon she woke up, sat up in his lap, went silent for a few seconds, and started crying again.

“Percy, you’re alive, you’re alive! Oh my gods, Percy, she—Gaea was stabbing you in the chest and you were dying and I—”

“Shh. Annabeth, it’s okay,” Percy murmured, pulling Annabeth's head to rest on his shoulder. “Go back to sleep.” He leaned her back against him.

Annabeth nodded, buried her face in Percy’s neck, and fell back asleep right away.

“I love you,” Percy whispered.

They stayed like that the rest of the night.
