Percy’s heart pounds. He can’t make sense of what’s happening. “Annabeth, please…”

“It’s too late, Percy.”

“But Wise Girl, I love you!”

“I know. And that just makes this that much more fun.” Annabeth grins a sly grin and lifts the bronze object in her hand, before flinging it at Percy. It hits him in the stomach and he doubles over and collapses onto the ground.

“Annabeth, why?” Tears brim in his eyes.

“Come on, Seaweed Brain! After all these years of battle training, I thought you’d be able to catch a frisbee!”

“It’s a shield!”

“A children’s shield, made for a four year old’s training. It’s no bigger or heavier than a frisbee.”

Percy grins and shouts, “Think fast!” as the frisbee travels through the air straight at Annabeth. She catches it with ease, giving a fake yawn to gloat. “Oh, come on. You make it look so easy!”

“That’s because it is easy.”

“Not to me!”

Annabeth stands up on the small fountain in front of the front steps of her school. “I’m Percy Jackson,” she says in a deepened voice. “I defeated the Minotaur when I was twelve years old, I conquered the Titan Kronos at fifteen, I helped beat Gaea the earth goddess, held up the sky, got blown up, stabbed, beaten, cut, and burned, and survived this long—but I can’t catch a frisbee!”

“Shut up.” Percy chuckles as he walks over to where she stands. He jumps up on the edge of the fountain with her and then stands in the water, so they can walk and talk, the frisbee completely forgotten. They discuss Annabeth’s plans for their future. At one point, she gets so excited and caught up in the moment that when she waves her hands in the air while explaining an idea she had for their future house, she loses her balance and starts to fall, away from Percy, head-first towards the concrete.

Suddenly Percy’s arms wrap around her waist, catching her mid-fall. “Thanks,” she says breathlessly.

“No problem,” Percy replies. Their faces are inches apart, and Percy slowly closes that space by softly connecting their lips. The kiss making his heart flutter causes the fountain to erupt and shower mist over the pair.

They break apart and the suspended water droplets fall, soaking Annabeth. “Sorry,” Percy mutters, and wills the water to evaporate from her hair and clothes.

Annabeth giggles as Percy helps her get upright and they both hop down from the fountain. But her smile immediately drops when a nasally voice with a Valley Girl accent says, “Annie!” Annabeth glares daggers at the girl who’d said her despised nickname. The girl has a very short skirt and a low-cut crop top, and is flanked by two other girls wearing the exact same thing except in different colours. Each one has brightly coloured makeup on and so much hairspray that none of their carefully placed curls atop their heads even bounce when they walk.

“Psst, Annabeth, who is she?” Percy asks uncomfortably.

“Andrea.”

“Who?”

“Not important.”

“Who’s this hot hunk of man?”

Percy internally gags. “Percy Jackson. Why do you care?”

“I saw you standing on the fountain just now and wondered if I could interrupt. I mean, he’s only here because you paid him to be so you could make it look like you had friends, right? I mean, why else would someone so hot be hanging around such a massive nerd?” She and her friends laugh.

Percy stands stunned while Annabeth just stands there, blushing and so infuriated tears sprung to her eyes. Percy started towards the bullies, but Annabeth grabbed his arm. “You can’t fight them, they’re just mortals,” she muttered under her breath, barely even moving her lips. “Besides, I’ve dealt with her before, she’s in the dorm right next to mine. I can handle it.”

“How about you donate your boy toy to our group, we’ll have lots of fun together. We were thinking of a sleep over in my dorm tonight, but one more wouldn’t hurt, if you know what I mean.”

A tear traces down Annabeth’s bright pink face. Then Percy gets an idea. He can’t fight them, they’re just mortals. So he does the next best thing: he sasses them.
“Actually,” he says, “I’m kind of taken tonight. I certainly hope you don’t have the room right next to Annabeth’s because we’re gonna be loud, if you know what I mean,” he says, echoing Andrea’s snobbish tone at the last part.

The girls stand there, stunned. One of them mutters to the others that they should move the sleep over. Percy accepts this as a victory. And with that, he turns to Annabeth, wraps one hand around her waist while cupping the other around the back of her head to tangle his fingers in her hair, dips her as low as she can go, and kisses her like there’s no tomorrow.

And as they passionately kiss in front of the bullies, a pipe in the fountain mysteriously bursts, drenching the girls in cold water and ruining their hair and makeup. They never make fun of Annabeth ever again.
