Percy stumbled into the building and immediately collapsed, but positioned himself to make sure the unconscious girl in his arms didn't so much as touch the wood floor. Both of them were black and blue with bruises, bleeding from dirty cuts and scrapes, and extremely underweight. But hey, a week in hell will do that to you.

Percy ignored the water, food, medical supplies, and questions he received from the other campers to kneel and cradle Annabeth in his arms. He brushed a bloody lock of blond hair out of her face. "Annabeth," he rasped, voice hoarse from screaming and the shitty air he'd been breathing for the past week, yet gentle because, after all, it was Annabeth. She'd passed out from pain somewhere along the way, so he'd had to carry her. "Wake up."

But she did not move.

"Annabeth?" He adjusted himself and sat down, gently shaking her shoulder to wake her. Her head lolled to the side but she didn't wake, didn't even stir. Percy became panicked, but before he could check on her again, Jason grabbed him around his arms from behind while a random Apollo camper trickled nectar into his mouth. He felt energy flood him, but all it did was fuel his anxiety. When he'd swallowed, Will Solace put two fingers against Annabeth's neck to feel for a pulse, and then everyone went silent.

In that moment Percy Jackson felt his whole world come crumbling down around him.

"No," he whispered. "NO!" He struggled to get out of the son of Jupiter's strong grip, to reach his Wise Girl, but it was no use; his time in Tartarus had weakened him and he couldn't escape. The other campers tried to calm him down, but nothing worked. He screamed and cried and hollered threats at them, pleading for them to let him go. He needed to save her. He promised he would save her. He swore to protect her, they had to let him try to save her because she couldn't be dead, she just couldn't.

Finally, he stopped fighting and collapsed to his knees, tears streaking through the dirt and dry blood on his face, and began to sob.

"She died. She died right in my arms and I didn't even know."
