Fuck, was all Nico could think as the teenagers advanced toward him. Of course he hadn't brought his Stygian iron sword to school, and even if he did, the mortals wouldn't even see it and back off. So now he was left, cornered and defenseless, shrinking against a wall.

Erm, Dad? Athena? Zeus? Aphrodite? Someone? Help? He prayed, but nothing happened.

"I think it's time for the little emo bitch to learn his lesson." The oldest and biggest football player on the high school team sneered.

"What did I do?" Nico's situation was long past sarcasm and snark to keep the bad guys at bay. And he suddenly had a feeling these were monsters (he mentally facepalmed-he's got to remember to bring his sword!). He didn't understand. He had never done anything to these guys! All he did was sketch pictures of Will when he was feeling good, Tartarus when he was feeling bad, and play on his phone all the rest of the time (Leo had made it so demigods could have phones.)

"You existed, punk."

Nico tried to block most of the blows, but when he figured the football team was half done with him, he had bruises littering his arms, legs, stomach, and face, a bloody nose and bleeding lip, cuts scattered here and there on his body, and tattered, dirty clothes. He tried to get up but his muscles were aching so badly he could barely move. He was pretty sure he had at least one broken bone. He wept quietly and tried to scramble away, but then one of them picked him up by his hair and pinned him against the corner.

Suddenly the football team changed. Nico wanted to scream in both fear and frustration, and he would have, too, if the quarterback wasn't covering his mouth. Of course they were monsters. But why didn't he know it right away?

The devilish face of the monster grinned. "You know, your dad asked us to do this. He's bored of you. He'll be glad when you're finally back in Tartarus with us, where you belong."

Nico's eyes widened. He tried to struggle but he couldn't escape the demon's grasp. Out of the corner of his eye he saw one of the boys covering the security camera. The demon let a claw grow as long as a dagger and placed the sharp tip onto Nico's skin. He went completely limp as a last resort.

"What? He's not even going to fight? Man, this is boring." One of the guys in Nico's peripheral vision pouted.

The claw stabbed into his hip like a sword, growing ever longer. Soon he was pinned to the wall by his waist, dangling several inches off the ground. He screamed, tears streaming, but no one came. He wasn't loud enough behind the monster's hand. The hand that was now growing claws, too, cutting his cheek. His tears burned against his cuts.

"Can we go now? He'll die on his own if we leave him here anyway," said the pouty one. The others reluctantly nodded in agreement. The quarterback bit off his claw so Nico would stay there, suspended in the air against the wall, to bleed out. They all left and went back to 'normal,' which in their case was shoving each other all over the place and going to torment some defenseless mortal to get him to do their homework.

Suddenly a horrible pain jolted his leg. He realised it was his phone vibrating in his pocket, and he pulled it out—with great difficulty—to answer it. "H-hello?" he croaked. He didn't have the strength to hold the device in his trembling fingers, so he put it on speakerphone, dropped it, and prayed it didn't shatter on impact with the ground.

"Oh my gods. Nico, are you alright? Who hurt you?" Will's voice came through the receiver. "I swear to all the gods, I'll kill them."

"W-Will..." Nico said weakly. "I'm at school...monsters attacked...I'm bleeding...please, help..."

"I'm on my way, Nico. One second." Nico heard silence. He started to weep, not from pain, but from heartache. Will hung up on him? He abandoned him to deal with this alone? "I need you to keep talking to me, okay? Where are you bleeding?"
