Chapter 3

Today has been neverending. I've had constant glares by the one and only Damon Young, king of the school who nobody must talk to because we aren't good enough, and more people are noticing me due to the argument we had at lunch.

I was walking down an empty hallway when the bell rang signalling for my second last lesson. I would be relieved as the day was soon to be over but hundreds of students filled the corridor and I hated people.

Especially when one brown haired blued eyed boy purposely bumped into me dropping my bag. I look up at him and glare as he laughs evilly and walks off. I hate Damon so bloody much.

"Just ignore him," Alex says helping me up as I put my bag back on.

"Well duh," I say with a slight laugh. I pull out my timetable to see what lesson we have next and I am blessed with my favourite lesson of all - sarcasm.

"What lesson do we have now anyway?" Alex leans on my shoulder to inspect my timetable, probably because I had mine out and his was probably stashed away somewhere deep in his bag.

"Maths," I say, "with your dad"

"Don't you sit behind us?"

"Yup, right next to Gary who looks at me like a snack all lesson." I feel Alex go stiff beside me which, in turn, makes me stiffen up too. Alex had been extremely light-hearted since I got here and seeing him tense at something only made me worry about him. Was there something I didn't know? Is Gary a cannibal?

"I'll ask my dad if I can switch seats with him."

"Really? How do you King Damon will feel about that?"

"He'll have to get over it. Besides, you're like the little sister I wanted and never got." Alex says with his usual smile surfacing.

"Little sister? You haven't even known me for two days." I laugh. I feel touched that he would say that but he barely even knows me.

"Well, you're interesting and far from the usual people that come to this school. I don't know, there's just something about you that makes me want to be all brotherly around you. Probably because I got stuck with Damon, and you," he nudged my arm, "are the only person I have met to talk back to him instead of praising his arrogance." We both laugh as we walk into the class.

I take my seat next to the cannibal whilst Alex talked to his dad about the movement of seats. In the corner of my eye, I can see Gary's gaze looking me up and down so I decided to look in the complete other direction - the direction Alex and his dad were. I see them both look over at us and nod. Alex makes his way over and tells Gary that he has to find another seat, unwillingly, he goes over to Damon and they both give each other a glare. Seems like Damon has more enemies than just me.

He turns around to glare at his brother giving him a 'what the fuck you know we don't like each other why would you betray me like that you traitor' kind of look. Then, his eyes turn to me.

"Dad!" Damon shouts. Damon, I swear to the unholy god of revenge if you make me sit next to Gary again I will end your miserable life you son of a bitc- "Can me and Alex switch seats?"

His words make both me and his brother jump back in our seats. He wasn't asking to sit back with his brother, he wants to sit with... me? Could this thing between him and Gary really be so bad that he would prefer me over him? Thinking about it, I would rather sit with Damon than Gary but out of Alex and Damon I would much rather sit with Alex. Well Juliet if you want to stop arguing with Damon and be his friend this is probably the best. I hated the thought, but the only friend I actually had made since I started was Alex and sure he thinks of me like his sister but I don't want to ruin their relationship because one thinks I'm cool and the other thinks I'm a cow.

"I just-" Mr Young pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs, "sort it out between yourselves, the lesson is starting soon." Damon looked at his brother and nod his head for him to move.

"And I was convinced you hated her," Alex laughs. He leaned forward and rested his face in the palm of his hand.

"It doesn't matter whether I hate her or not, you know I can't sit with something that proves evolution can go in reverse." Damon looks over to Gary whilst he insults him. I tried to hold back a slight smile from his comment but that was one of the best things I've heard from him all day.

"We wouldn't be having this argument if your brother kept his nose out of things that don't concern him. Maybe it runs in the family."

"Don't you dare talk about my family," Damon sneers. I turn to face Alex who looked more serious.

Gary smiled. He leaned back onto my desk and rested his cold hand on top of mine. I tried to pull back but his hand wrapped around my wrist. "I heard you at lunchtime, you're pretty cool."

I pulled my arm again but his hold was still tight. "Thanks. Let me go." He smiled again and looked at the three of us. His eyes lingered on Damon for the longest who stared him down with a clenched jaw.

Gary looked like a child who was winning Monopoly. His eyes twinkled with the same greed and victory as his grip tightened. He watched Damon for any sort of reaction but he stayed as still as stone.

There was no pain. Gary wasn't digging in his fingers or holding me so tight that it felt like no blood was circulating to my hand, but his grip was still tight and I wasn't able to wriggle out of it.

"That's enough, Gary," Alex said.

Gary pulls his eyes away from Damon to glance at Alex and then me. "Of course," he agreed and then let go of me whilst he looked towards Damon. "I wouldn't want to hurt the bellezza when she's still making friends here."

Damon stood from his chair and walked to Alex. Without any exchange in words, Alex stands too and sits where Damon was as Damon sits in the chair next to me.

"You wouldn't hurt her anyway," Damon replies when he pulls out his phone. "You can't even hurt a fly without feeling guilty."

Gary turned to face the front of the class and I look at Damon. He turned to me from his phone and raised an eyebrow. When I didn't look away, he gave me a small smile before looking back down at his phone on the desk.

His smile just might be my new favourite feature on his face. A feature that seems to make my other favourite light up and illuminate the room like the moon in the very dark depths of hell.

He ignored any attempts at a conversation I tried to make during the lesson but, by the end of it, I didn't care. I could be sitting next to Gary and now I'm not. Although, I do really want to find out what's going on between them and why Gary seemed to be so creepy.
