The Argo II came to a deserted part of the island. The wind blew bitterly cold, somehow a warning that a snowstorm might come unexpected.
Leo Valdez, having fire powers, never had difficulty with keeping himself warm.
“Do you mind sharing heat?” Hazel grumbled with a chilled voice.
He opened up his arms.
“Ugh, never mind,” she muttered.
The land they touched down on was a vast fragment of a big ice shelf and nothing more. No mortals, no animals and no creatures in sight. At least nowhere they could see.
Percy Jackson knew that this was an advantage, since the ocean was just three miles under where he was standing. Summoning it won’t be a big problem. He already did that in Alaska, when they rescued Thanatos, master of death, from Alcyoneus’ wrath.
And not to mention he brought down the entire ice pack.
Annabeth exhaled deeply on her cupped hands to heat them up and said, “Rachel said that the location is on Victoria and Albert Mountains. It’s a big place but I guess we’ll have clues along the way.”
“Do you think we should split up?” Jason asked.
“No!” They all protested.
“Alright,” he whispered and tightened his hold on his jacket.
The place never suggested any sign of life. Snow fell heavily but it wasn’t a snowstorm, yet.
“Be careful, we might get some Hyperboreans here,” said Percy. “This is Canada, after all.”
They all murmured in agreement.
Percy and the six had been walking for an hour already, and they might have almost reached the peak. The higher they walked on, the colder it got.
“My fire is snuffing out,” Leo complained. “Maybe we should go ba—”
Before he could continue, he fell on a crevice. Or not a crevice, since the snow was flat down. He just sank into the snow.
“Leo! Gods, Leo!” Hazel cried out.
Frank reached out for her but it was too late. “Hazel, no!”
She sank on the snow quickly before she could even react. Piper gasped in terror.
“What’s happening?!” a panicked Annabeth yelled.
“I- I don’t know! She just—” And the snowy earth gobbled up Frank.
Jason cursed loudly, and he, too, sank down, along with Piper who was beside him.
“Annabeth! Annabeth, hold my hand!” Percy shouted at her and reached out for her hand.
Annabeth ran to him. Inches away from his hand, she went under the snow’s surface.
Percy gaped at where she had been.
And the next thing he saw was darkness, and he felt was the cold snow swallowing him under.
“Percy? Percy, can you hear me?” someone called on him.
Percy’s eyes flung open upon hearing the call. He jerked up from lying flat on the cold floor. There was a huge silhouette in front of him and it walked until it was clear enough for him to see who it was. His father, Poseidon.
“Dad,” he murmured in relief.
Poseidon smiled at him and held out a hand to help him stand up. Percy took it and stood up with one effort. His dad patted his back.
