Chapter 2
*Emily*
It was Him. It was Mason.
We both just stood there in utter disbelief. It had been years since I'd seen this man, and I wanted it to stay that way. The last time I even looked at him was that one night back in high school, at Jessica's party. Since then, I haven't wanted anything to do with him. He broke my heart; he scarred me indefinitely.
He was the first to talk. "Well, hello, Emily. Long time no see. Please, sit down," He said, not looking away from my eyes. "Wow, Sweetheart, look at you; you're even more beautiful then when I last saw you,"
I sat down in a chair across from him that was fit for a giant. "Maso--err, I mean Mr. Meyers, please, let's keep this strictly professional. I don't want to hear a word from you about anything personal, okay? Keep your thoughts, and compliments, to yourself; they are not needed. Now, I have a few questions about how this firm works--"
"Emily, please I--"
"It's Miss Dane. Proceed,"
"Alright, Miss Dane. Before we get into the firm, I must tell you something. I've been waiting for this moment for years. I never thought I would see you again but hoped and prayed I would. I would like to discuss the formalities of what happened at Jessica Strouder's party--"
"Formalities? Mason you did something you shouldn't have. You ruined what we had and it will never return. You ruined us. Ugh, did I not tell you that I don't want to talk about this? Please, back to the firm--"
"Emily if you would only just listen to me--"
"I don't have to deal with this, Mr. Meyers," I remarked, annoyed. I got up from my chair and turned to walk out the door.
Mason stood up. "Emily please, sit back down. I won't bring up the past again, I promise. But I do need to speak with you about it. How about over lunch? We'll keep it professional,"
"Why should I bother? I'm talking to you now and that's already too far than I planned on going with you if I ever saw you again." And with that, I walked out the door. Before I closed it, I peeped my head back in the room. "Oh and Mr. Meyers, if I am going to be working here with you, you will call me Miss Dane." I slammed the door, which was kind of hard because it was so heavy, but I somehow managed to do it in my fit of anger.
I walked down the hall to the front where Charles was. He saw me coming and walked right up to me with a huge smile on his face. I was a little intimidated. "Ah, Miss Dane. Did Mr. Meyers answer all your questions? He is certainly the best at making our newcomers feel welcome," Charles said proudly.
"Actually, Charles, he wasn't exactly that. I was wondering if you could help me,"
Charles looked shocked. "Mr. Meyers, not helpful? That is quite odd, Miss Dane. But if you feel that way, I will help you," the smile returned.
"Thank you. It's not that he wasn't helpful, he tried. But he also brought up some things I was not comfortable discussing, and he did it countless times. I felt bombarded,"
"Brought up things? What--"
"Things in the past, I prefer them to stay that way. Anyway, Charles, my questions on the firm?" I put on a sweet smile just for emphasis. I really am beginning to become more comfortable.
"Oh yes, sorry Miss Dane. Come to my office, I'll explain everything you need to know." Charles led me down the opposite hall. We came up to a room a bit smaller than Mas--I mean Mr. Meyers'.

About an hour later, I knew just about everything I needed to know about the firm. Charles escorted me to my new office, which surprisingly was much bigger than I thought it would be, as I'm the new employee. It was just a little bit smaller than his. He left me to open the door and get started on my work. Not even a second after I opened the door, it smelled of flowers. I looked right at my desk and saw at least a dozen red roses sitting there. I immediately walked up to them and discovered a card. I picked it up and read it: "Miss Dane, I am terribly sorry for the way I acted. I just have some things I've needed to say to you for a long time. Are we still on for lunch? Strictly professional. -Mason.
I thought about it, but knew it was a bad idea. I couldn't go to lunch with him to discuss what happened in the past; those were hurtful days, which I never planned on returning to.
I sat down and got to work, eyeing the roses a time or two every hour. I honestly didn't know what to do. I thought I had my mind made up, but as soon as I saw him I wanted to be in his arms again. No, don't think that! I scolded myself. I need to keep my mind off of Maso--Mr. Meyers for awhile.
In about three hours after my recollection I was finished with my work. After momentarily realizing that I had missed lunch entirely, I collected my things and went to find Charles. Instead, I found Mr. Meyers. I slowly walked up to him. I don't know why but I began blushing. "Excuse me, Mr. Meyers," Mason turned around to face me with a huge smile on his face. I continued. "Do you know where I can find Charles? I'm done for the day and I need to let him know," Wow, I thought, I'm getting warm just looking at him.
Mason's smile turned down a little, but he still kept it. "He is in a meeting, Miss Dane, but I will tell him you left,"
"Alright, thank you, Mr. Meyers," I started to walk away.
I heard my name being called. I turned around quickly to find Mason looking at me with a peculiar smile on his face. "What is it?" I asked.
"I could've sworn you came to see me about our date, seeing that you were blushing worse than you did back in third grade when I kissed you," he winked at me.
I laughed, even though I shouldn't have. "Shut up." I teased, and walked out the doors to my car. Boy, I thought to myself. He sure is handsome.
I stopped in my tracks. What am I doing? I can't think of him like this, he cheated on me. I wanted to slap myself. I couldn't help the feeling though, it seems kind of as if he's changed. I continued walking to my car. When I reached it, there was a note on the windshield. I picked it up. "Miss Dane, I hope you liked the flowers. If I remember correctly, it always took a second attempt to convince you anything. Here is my second try: Please come to lunch with me tomorrow, as you missed your chance today. Again, strictly professional. -Mr. Meyers.
I read the note over and over about five times. I looked back at the building I just came from and saw Mason looking at me through the glass doors. He smiled. I couldn't hide my tiny smile that was growing, so I quickly turned away and ducked into my car.
Maybe he has changed. But I can't be so sure. This lunch date wouldn't be so bad, I thought to myself. Maybe it could help me really see if he's different.
I drove off, contemplating what to do in my mind. I really didn't know.
