Riverwood Prep: First Impressions

Chapter 1

I woke up to the sound of tires rolling on gravel. "We're here!"said my Dad. I looked out the window. Outside, I saw the Riverwood Prep entrance.

Riverwood is one of the most prestigious boarding schools in the country. They were praised for their academics and interscholastic activities. Students came here from all over the country to excel in their individual interests.

As we passed the navy blue and gold flags, I screamed in my head. It's always been a dream of mine to come here with my horse, Max. Max (or Maximillian) is a 16.1 dapple grey Selle-Français gelding. Long story short, we rocked every show ring. But that was just the smaller shows. It will definitely be harder now. I'd have to prove myself to everyone else that I'm a good rider.

"Are you excited Jen?"questioned my mom.
"I'm excited but also a little nervous," I replied. After all, this was a new school and I would have no friends. I'd have to make some up quickly.

Dad pulled into a parking place and I rushed out to unload Max. "Maxi we're here buddy!" He perked his ears toward me and whinnied. I could tell he was anxious to get out of the trailer. He nearly bolted when I unloaded him, but I kept a firm grip on his lead.

"I'll go put Max in the stables Dad," I said.
"Alright we'll be right behind you" he answered.

I walked with Max to the stable. This place is so nice I thought to myself. It really was. Great stone buildings shown in the sun. Vast open fields with leafy green trees spread across the open sky. "It won't take long to get used to this right Max?" Max edged toward a patch of grass trying to eat it. I laughed at him. He was so determined!

The barn was HUGE! It seemed like it held thousands of horses! The ailes were swept clean, free of any dirt. Max's hoofs made clip-clop sounds whenever they struck the matted stone pathway.

I looked around for stall 36 and found it. Earlier this week the school had sent me Max's stall number. A golden nameplate on the stall door read "Maximillian AKA Max". Below that it said "Owned by Jennifer Quaintance". I unlatched the stall door and led Max in. He walked around a bit and then settled down eating some hay.

"Looks like he's settling in well," my mom said as she carried some of my tack to me. "Are you almost ready to go see your dorm?"

"Yup let me just put everything away in the tack room!" I replied.

Within a few minutes we were walking towards Wilber hall, my dorm. According to an email I was sent, I was in room 3c with another freshman named Elizabeth Powers. Hulling my bags up the stairs, my parents and I slowly made our way to the room. I toke a deep breath then slide my ID in to open the room.
Wow!

My room was very spacious- with nice hard wood floors and comfy furniture.
The windows have a great view of the campus. The room also included two beds, two desks, and a walk in closet for clothes. All of a sudden, a girl with light brown hair with deep blue eyes walked up to me.

"You must be Jennifer! I'm Elizabeth!"

"Hey that's me," I replied. "This is an awesome room, am I right?"

"Totally!"

I could tell that we were so becoming bffs.

Just then, Paige, the dorm monitor, walked in and gave us the run down on how everything went here.

"...be in bed by 10:45 and most importantly, no boys in the dorm at all times. Follow those rules and we'll all be happy," she said as she finished.

"All right sweetie this is probably where we leave you," my mom said. A tear slowly ran down her face. We were back in the parking lot.

"Mom don't cry! I'll be fine, promise!" I comforted her."I'll see you in the fall!"

"Bye Kiddo, good luck with try outs and make sure to call us every so often," Dad added in.

"Thanks Dad, I won't forget,"I smiled.

One last hug and then they were off.

I was on my own. Time to prove that I belong here!
