A bright and sunny morning greeted Kisses as she faced her first day of school in her senior year at Ateneo. It was not congruent with her mood.“Lord, I hope I won’t see him today.”
‘That is highly improbable Kisses, you are both on the same floor,’ said her conscience, a miniature Kisses wearing a white dress with wide, white, feathery wings, whom she has named Angel Kisses.
‘Weak…’ said her Devil Kisses, dressed in a short red dress, holding a pitchfork.
‘Stop putting her mood down!’ said her Angel Kisses.
Kisses slowly opened her eyes and stared up at the ceiling. It was full of glow in the dark stars.
“Why does my chest feel heavy? I think there’s really no need to go to school today, it’s the first day after all, right?” she said to herself.
‘Too true,’ said the Devil Kisses.
Her miniature Angel just looked at her sadly.‘Oh no! You should go to school, we should not let He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named see that his ugly face has hurt us deeply!’ her Devil Kisses insisted.
“Kisses, anak! Are you awake na ba?” her mother called from outside her door.
“Yes Mom! Coming na po!”
After her morning rituals, Kisses came down running down the stairs and straight to the dining room.
“Hmmm, pancakes!”
“Of course, Anak. It’s your first day of school,” her mother said.
“Thanks Ma, thanks Manang Inday!”
Her mom and manang just smiled as they watched Kisses inhale her pancakes.
“Is Marco coming to get you today?”
Marco had been given a car last year, and he had offered to be the one to drive Kisses to school instead of her being driven around by Manong Bert since they lived in the same subdivision and Marco wanted to be pressured to arrive at school early.
“Oh no, he got a girlfriend this summer and now he has to travel to Happy Valley to drive his girlfriend.”
It was painful, saying it. Now, Marco will be with Vivoree. Last year, that was me, Kisses, whom he waited for outside her house without fail every schooldays and school functions. But she had to hide her pain and look strong to her mother.
“Oh, I’ll just call Manong Bert hija.”
“Thanks Mom.”
After eating, Kisses did her casual everyday make-up, then went downstairs to say goodbye to her mom.
“Good luck on your first day of school, anak. Stay strong ha. Focus on your studies, baka mas matulungan ang pag mo-move on mo.”
“Mommy naman eh, wala na kaya akong feelings sa kanya. New school year, new difficulties to face, wala nap o akong time sa love life.”
