"Mills?" I turned my head, facing Coach Dubry below me on the bleachers. I got up and moved closer. "New meat, am I right?" I nodded. "Well, can you tell me why you are choosing to sit with me instead of join the rest and run?"
I shrugged. "You're less intimidating then them I guess," I replied honestly.
He chuckled. "I'm less intimidating? Explain that to me Mills, enlighten me."
"Well...it's easier to be accepted by you then by them. I don't have to worry about what you think of me or constantly ridiculed for a dumb decision I make in life, I can just be me. You know? I can be Harvey Mills, I don't have to be Max anymore."
"Well who do you want to be?" He stared at me with a questioning look, free of judgment. I glanced down at my shoelaces.
"I don't know," I whispered, a bit ashamed. "I want to be my own person, but I don't know how. Everything I think of, Max has already done, just ten times better. I don't think I ever could be anyone other than Max, even if I tried."
"Find something he's not done before and be better. That's my advice, or you can live in your brother's shadow for the rest of your time. It's a choice, and it's always been a choice, you just haven't realized it." He watched me carefully inspect my jeans, thinking carefully. "Meet me after school, 3:30, don't be late. Now go, the others will think I'm picking favorites."
I ran off to join the others, jogging alongside a tall girl. "Congratulations Mills," she said. "You just got recruited for football." She sped up.
"What?" I tried to keep up with her.
"Dubry must see something in you, I sure as hell don't, but he does." And with that, she left as the bell rang.
I followed the flow of the halls, by now I was used to being carried away by the crowd, you just have to know which drift to follow.
