I felt empty and broken like there was no purpose for me to be alive. I took a deep breath and pulled out Amelia's note. I sat there on the wooden church bench staring at the words. The words 'I'm proud of you.' kept replaying on my head.
"How are you feeling?" My mom came and sat down next to me wearing a black dress.
"Broken." I looked up at her with watery eyes as she rubbed my back. I looked up at the portrait of Amelia and let out more tears. I knew she was going to be gone but I didn't expect it this soon.
We sat in silent until Alfonso and Leticia came up to us. Both tired as ever with tear stains. I stood up and gave Leticia a hug which made us both cry on each other's shoulder. Alfonso join the hug and hold back his tears.
Ever since Amelia passed away, he's been trying to stay strong knowing that's what Amelia would want.
We let go of each other and give each other a small smile. "No sabes cuánto te agradezco por todo, Joel." Her father spoke.
"You were such a blessing to her." Leticia said wiping her tears. "Te lo agradecemos mucho. Lo que necesitas, aquí estaremos." I nodded and thank them. More family members came and hugged us three.
Couple of minutes later, everyone settle in and the mass started. The priest talked and soon it was her parents turn to talk. Leticia broke down crying as everyone around us did too.
"We want to bring up her husband." Alfonso said through the microphone. I looked up surprised and panic a little since I had nothing prepared.
I walked up to the stool and looked at everyone. I looked at my mother who gave me a warm smile.
"I-I actually didn't know I was going to speak." I breath out. "And I don't know how much I'll last before breaking down." I chuckled.
"Amelia," I looked up again. "She was the best thing that's ever happened to me." I felt the lump on my throat get bigger. "She thought me to love myself and others around me. She thought me to chase my dreams regardless." I looked at my mother who had tears in her eyes.
"I don't know what else to say." I said tearing up. "Only thing that I know is that I'm going to go after my dream since I know that's what Amelia would want me to do. Also, that these ten years with her were the best years of my life. I love you Amelia" I whispered the last part and looked at her portrait. "Forever." I whispered.
I felt someone embrace me but noticed it wasn't anyone then I smelt Amelia's perfume and at that moment, I knew she was present.
