We pulled up to a huge mansion surrounded by trees. The front courtyard was done beautifully and the plants looked well tended. The car stopped and I unbuckled my seatbelt. A man came and helped Charles into his wheelchair as I grabbed my bag and exited the car. The school was huge and looked like an old castle. Some vines grew up on the walls of the mansion and it looked a tad worn down.

We went inside and stopped in an entrance. Two stair cases going opposite directions went upstairs. There was a hallway going towards a kitchen, living room, and dining area. There was another hallway which had old carpeting leading towards a series of doors. I looked around in awe. I had never been in such a big mansion. Other children chattered amongst themselves as they all went different directions.

"Now, this here is Hank McCoy. He'll show you to your dorm. Once your settled then we'll see what you can do." Charles said. A man wearing glasses walked up to me and held out his hand. "Hello." He greeted. "Hi." I said shyly and shook his hand. "Follow me." He said and smiled. I nodded and followed him up the left side staircase that led to a hallway with even more doors. And even more students. We walked side by side. I felt eyes on me and I instantly just looked down at my feet.

We came to the third last door in the hall. Hank opened the door for me and I walked in. It was bigger than my last room. It had a bed against the wall and two side tables with lamps on either side of the bed. The blankets were bland and the curtains on the window matched. The curtains were drawn open slightly, allowing light to hit the bare walls plastered with wallpaper. "Make yourself at home." Hank said. He smiled at me and closed the door.

I swung my bag off my shoulder and onto the bed. I noticed a dresser and I went to open the drawers. They were all empty. I decided to pack later. So instead I went to the bathroom (which took me a long time to find) and splashed water onto my pale, freckled face. I never looked in the mirror at the orphanage. My round cheeks made my hazel, round eyes seem smaller than they actually were. I wasn't over weight but I wasn't skinny either. My stomach poked out which annoyed a lot. My dark hair was placed in a messy bun and I couldn't be bothered to try to tame the knots. I looked around for a towel and I wipe my face from the water as I headed back down the stairs.

Hank and Charles were talking silently together. I walked slowly down the stairs, unsure if I should interrupt. Thankfully Charles noticed me and stopped his conversation. "Right this way." He said. We went out into a huge backyard with trees and a pond with targets in the other side. We stopped in front of the water, directly across from a red and white target. "Can you control your powers?" Charles asked. "I don't know." I replied honestly. "Well, just try to hit the target." He said nodding at me.

I didn't exactly know what to do. So I held out my hand and focused until I could feel the darkness envelope me. I shot out my hand and a black sand shot out, across the pond and right at the target destroying it. The darkness left and I felt my knees go weak as I fell onto the ground. Hank pulled me to my feet again. Charles looked impressed but Hank looked concerned. "Can you still help me?" I asked. "I think we can." Charles replied nodding. Hank had asked a dozen times if I was okay. All I could do was nod.

Everyone was piling into the dining room and taking a seat. I sat at the end of the table and avoided looking at other kids. I wasn't good with having friends. They always ditched me or used me. So I kept to myself. Unfortunately a guy with weird glasses sat beside me. "Are you new?" He asked. I turned to him slowly and looked at him before finally deciding to nod. "Yeah." I muttered. A girl with red hair sat across from me. "I'm Jean." She said to me and smiled politely. Well I guess I have no choice but to talk to people, I thought.

"I'm Scott." He said giving me a cocky smile. "Amanda." I introduced myself. We didn't talk much after that. We ate our food silently and walked up to our dorms together. "So what's a girl like you doing in a dump like this?" Scott asked smirking. Jena rolled her eyes. "Just ignore him." She said. I couldn't help but smile at the two of them. "Tomorrow we don't have any classes so maybe we can do something fun." She suggested. "Like a prison break?" Scott suggested. "No, Scott. Remember what happened last time we left the school?" She seemed to have shut him up.

"Sure. You can choose what we do. I don't really know what there is to do around here." I told her. Jean smiled and nodded. "We'll show you around. Well, good night Amanda." She said and walked to her dorm. Now it was just me and Scott walking slowly down the hall. "So what's your power?" He asked casually. "I'm not really sure. I can make sort of a black sand." I said. He nodded as if he understood. "I have laser eyes." He said. I nodded as if I knew what he meant. Yeah my Great Aunt Berta had that too. What a pain right? I thought and smiled to myself. "What's so funny?" He asked smirking AGAIN.

"Oh nothing." I said and bit my bottom lip to stop myself from smiling. We finally reached my dorm. "Well I'll see you tomorrow then." I said and entered my dorm. I closed my door before he could ask me about what I was laughing at. I saw my bag on the bed still and I pulled out some pyjamas that were buried at the bottom of my bag. I got changed and tossed my dirty clothes and the bag onto the floor. I got cuddled up under the covers and fell asleep.
