Maths (as usual) drags as I find my mind wandering to Taylor. I have never asked anyone out, ever but I really want to go out with Taylor. I just hope that he asks me out. My teacher's abrupt voice pulls me out of my daydream. "Jade, what is the answer?" Just my luck – the usually miserable (and detention giving) teacher picks me, my confused (and recently spot free) face looks up at our Maths teacher and catches the attention of Megan-Eloise. Sitting beside me on the left, she whispers the answer. "Erm ... 95"
"Well done".
I got away with that one. When Mr Grumpy isn't looking at me, I gratefully nod at Megan, who wears black trousers, shirt, tie and a woolly cardigan. Her long glossy brown hair falls down past her shoulders. Jealous? Yes, I am. My ever wavy, shoulder length hair will not, ever stay straight. Ever. As you may have noticed, I do get distracted easily. I must admit completing sheets of simultaneous equations isn't that exciting however, especially in a double maths lesson!
I look at my watch, just before someone pokes me, bringing me out of my thoughts. Calum – my Maths partner (who sits on the other side of me). "Hey", I whisper yell.
"Sir said detention if you don't finish."
"I'm on the second page." I reply, knowing I will finish before the bell.
"I'm finished," he replies with a smirk, his black hair is styled in a quiff as his tight, white shirt clad body shakes with his laughs of amusement. I also notice a new tie and smart black jeans. Who is he trying to impress? I wonder. Would it be the pretty girl sitting next to me? I smile.
"Smart ass,” I say as a comeback. A late comeback, but late is better than never, right?
"Dumb kid." He replies kidding, looking at me with an amused expression on his face.
"I got an A at GCSE and I'm older than you."
"I got an A star and I can play guitar."
"Like I said, Smart ass."
A loud bang comes from the front of the room as our red - faced teacher bangs the board. "Thank you for your attention, Jade and Calum. Now, GET ON WITH YOUR WORK!"
Getting back to the Math, I finish within ten minutes and find myself going to get more work off our stroppy teacher.
"Have you got any more sheets Sir, I've finished". I say like the super-nerd I am classed as at school.
"Yes, you can do the extra ones" … “Well done." He takes a look over my finished work. "Everything is right too, well done!"
"Thank you." I smile gratefully. This is why I like Maths - I can actually get things right sometimes. I manage another four questions before the bell.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
"Okay off you go. Leave your sheets at the front, please. "
Walking out of the room, I wait for Megan-Eloise. "Hi. Thanks for saving me in there."
"No problem and Oh My God Jade! You should know that talking is a BAD idea in Maths." She waves her hands side to side to emphasise the BAD in Maths.
"Okay, Mother! For the record though, it wasn't me. Calum was doing the talking."
"I heard." Was that jealousy I heard? I wonder.
"Megan, me and you both know I like Taylor." I say sighing.
"I know."
Walking through the big blue doors into the school canteen, we walk over to our usual place (the big table at the back, which I find has the most comfortable chairs). Autumn and Natasha (our other amazing best friends) are already there. Natasha is sitting on Luke’s lap - obviously not minding the lack of chairs. Luke is another nice guy at school and a heck of a good singer too. He is also one of my best friends. He makes me laugh and is extremely kind. He is like the big brother I never had. His blond hair is perfectly styled as usual. His perfect looks match with his amazing personality and attract most of the girls in our year. I however like him as a brother, he is one of my closest best friends. Plus, I can tell him anything and he would never dream of telling anyone else. The best thing about him though is that he only has eyes for Natasha, who is also one of the nicest people in the world as well. That is why they suit each other so much! She is one lucky girl!
“Hey Tash.”
“Hey Jade, you okay?” Natasha says as Luke smiles at me.
“Yes, good thanks.”
“Hey Autumn,” I say.
“Hey.”
After about five minutes all of us are here for our dinner and are talking and laughing like usual – Me, Natasha, Autumn, Lauren, Ashton, Megan, Michael, Megan, Alicia, Dylan, Calum, Luke and Taylor. We are a big group of friends but we all stick together. We are all here for one another.
Taylor takes a seat next to me and nudges my shoulder with his. I knock his bag strap off his shoulder and we started laughing. Megan-Eloise pokes me, “Jade, when you knocked his bag strap off his shoulder it looked like you were stripping him.” I laugh and feel my face heat up. A lot. I must look like a sun burnt tomato.
“You are so dirty – minded. All I did was knock one bag strap off his shoulder.”
“I was being honest.” She whispered.
“Very funny.” I smile, actually laughing.
“I don’t know why you don’t ask him out. You like him, he likes you.” She says to me, her face and smiling and her eyes looking at me honestly.
“He doesn’t like me. I don’t feel confident in asking him. I mean why go for me when he can go out with any other girl in school.”
“Because you are you – you’re different than all the other girls that flirt with him all of the time, especially in his mind. He likes you. Why else would he not have a girlfriend at the moment? He has had plenty of offers but only decides to spend his time with you…” She trails off, obviously hoping I’d get the hint.
“No, he doesn’t.”
“Yes he does, you two are so obvious. I mean seriously, the only people who don't realise this is you two.”
“You and Calum are obvious too.” I say in a childish tone, trying to change the subject of me and Taylor. Looking at her shocked, minimal make up wearing face, I know it has worked.
“I don’t like Calum.” Seriously, like I don’t know! She looks to her right, not in my eyes and her eyebrow twitches like it usually does when she lies.
“Yes you do.” I grin, it would be really good if I could do some match – making with them two. I could even get Taylor to help.
Without waiting for her response, I grab Taylor’s arm and his really, really heavy bag and drag him along with me. I know my timetable and his – we both have free lessons next. Taylor doesn’t refuse, we would usually hang out in the free lessons we have or do homework.
“Taylor, I need a favour.”
His long arms reach for his bag as he says, “What do you need?”
“I take it you have noticed Calum and Megan, the way they look at each other, get jealous if someone of the opposite sex goes near either one of them...”
“Yes...” His lips pull into a grin and his eyes sparkle with mischief, he knows what I’m thinking.
“I will help you, obviously.”
“I knew you would.”
“You know I would, your majesty.”
“Very funny, Prince Charming.”
“So you admit that I am charming?” His perfect grin widens.
“Wasn’t Prince Charming a frog?” I grin and flip my hair from in my eyes.
“Maybe, but you aren’t denying it.”
Someone coughs from behind Taylor’s broad shoulders. Taylor moves to stand beside me. “Quit your flirting. I heard everything and you are going to need my help.”
I blush just as Taylor says, “We weren’t flirting!”
“Don’t even deny it.” Luke says smiling mischievously at both of us. “So, let’s talk ideas. Let’s go to the Common Room.” Me and Taylor follow him. At least Luke changed the subject, for now. Somehow, I know I am going to go through a talk with him at some point.
