They arrived on time, just as dusk began. Even though they arrived as night began, Iris still had to wake up early, for it took most of the day to style everybody's hair, fix clothes, put on makeup, and other things of the sort. They could only eat a little at home that day; there was a feast, as always, during the ceremony. It was common courtesy to eat, it was considered rude if you didn't.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Iris stepped out of the car. She had been chosen to give the offering to the patron god, for she had a graceful step, a strong voice, and was considered the most beautiful in the village. Iris toyed with her necklace. It was given to her as a gift from her mother, of whom she had never met. Iris practiced her speech in her mind one more time. Hello fellow citizens. We are all gathered here today to give an offering to our patron god, Tarek. She would then offer a present to the god. This year, it was a golden seashell, with the song of a siren echoing from within. If all went to plan, Tarek would come down in his human form, accept the gift, and return back to the Heavens, providing another year of peace.

The festivities began as the night began. Iris's speech would not begin until after the feast, so she helped herself to some food. She grabbed some lobster, one of her favorite foods, and sat down. As she ate, she wondered what was going to happen. She hoped that everything went well. If her voice stuttered, the ceremony may be a failure. If she fell when presenting the gift, it may not be accepted. There was a lot of pressure, but the village was sure she could do it. She was chosen, after all.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The feast had ended. It was time for Iris to give her speech. She recited the words carefully, being sure to not make any faults. There was a gust of wind as she finished, and a figure appeared from the shadows. Tarek was here.
