****Mackenzie POV****
"Mackenzie you have to come with us to the bonfire!" my best friend Chesney whines as she looks through my closet.
"I just want to be alone!" I retort,"Daxton you're on my side right?"
Daxton looks up startled from the game he's playing on his phone, he's been letting me and Chesney have at it and hasn't said anything.
"Sorry Kenz, I'm with Ches, I'm going too," he says.
"Why are you going?" I ask.
"Zadie is going, it's her brothers best friends house it's gonna be at," he says.
"Cmon Mac it's the first day of summer you have to do SOMETHING fun," Chesney says,"besides Jed's got some cute single friends...."
"They're probably all idiots," I say rolling my eyes.
"Please? For me? I'll never bother you about meeting new people ever again."
"Fine," I sigh and she starts dancing around and squealing.
"Now we have to get you all dolled up," she says and I glare.
"Nope," I say,"if I'm going I'm wearing this," I say pointing at my current attire: cowboy boots, cut off shorts, and a George Strait tank top.

I knew I should've fought Chesney harder when she convinced me to come. Per usual the second we got to the bonfire she was off with her boyfriend of almost two years, Jed. I think Daxton went off with Zadie, the girl he's been dating for a month or so and Chesney's older brother was around here somewhere but I didn't have any intention of talking to him, he was a strange soul. He was gullible and innocent but tried to act like he was a bad boy by hanging around parties like these. There was alchohol and cigarettes everywhere, but I stuck closer to the fire where there were less people to bother me.
I was just about to call an uber to take me home when a guy walks up to me. He looks about my age, maybe a little older. He was pretty cute, but the beer in his hand and the ego emulating off him was a total turn off.
"Hey I'm Cody," he says glancing me up and down,"and you are?"
"And I was just leaving," I say turning around but I trip on a rock and fall towards the bonfire before someone grabs my arm and yanks me to my feet.
"I was just about to scare Cody away from you but I guess jumping into the fire works too," the guy says laughing. His accent is noticeably not from here, he lacks much of a drawl at all honestly which was weird around here, he must be a college kid that grew up away from here.
I notice an ember fall on his shirt and start a little flame,"I'm Nick by the way," he says completely ignorant to the small flame.
"You're on fire," I say and he laughs a bit.
"I guess you could say that," he says.
"No you're literally on fire," I say pointing at his shirt and he glances down and realizes his shirt is burning.
"Shit!" he yells before yanking off his T-shirt, throwing it at the ground, and stomping it out. I glance at his body and notice the lack of a farmers tan, his whole body was tan like some Hawaiian weirdo.
"Where are you from?" I blurt out before thinking.
He smirks and glances up at me after brushing the dirt off his shirt and pulling it back on.
"Why? You like the view?"
"No, you don't have a farmers tan," I say realizing how crazy I sound.
"Well, I grew up on the West coast, and whatever farmers tan I had fades away after going surfing a few times," he says.
"Well nice meeting you but I was just going," I say pulling out my phone.
"How about if you give me just an hour of your time I'll take you home, that way you aren't wasting money on an Uber," he suggests and I shrug and put away my phone. One hour of my time was worth less than what an Uber home would cost.
"So who do you know in this group?" he asks after we take a seat on a haystack far away from everyone else.
"Well Chesney and Daxton are the ones that drug me here, Daxton only came for Zadie and Chesney is inseparable from her boyfriend Jed," I say,"oh and I know Graham but who knows where he is."
"No kidding? Jed's my best friend," he says laughing," and Zadie's brother Wesley is a pretty good friend of mine too, he's kind of an idiot though."
"Your best friend is Jed? But you're so... not country...." I say.
"Hey! Just cuz I'm not from here doesn't mean I can't hold my ground."
"I guess we'll see about that," I say.
"Will we?" he asks smiling,"you seem interesting I'd like to get to know you better."
"I guess it could be fun to drag a city slicker through the mud," I say laughing and he rolls his eyes.
"You're on sweetheart, we'll see who's tougher."
This boy has no idea what he just got himself into. Honestly challenging a redneck girl to see who's tougher was suicide, I don't back down from a challenge.
