I have decided, strangers that appear randomly in clearings suck. They just do. All the time.
The male before me doesn't look like much. He's handsome, but all fae males are. For a fae he's rather unremarkable. If it weren't for the reactions of my companions, I wouldn't have given him a second glance.
But the way the others are reacting ... they've bristled, likes cats with their backs up. This male is dangerous. Very dangerous. And from the stories I've heard and guessed at, I have to assume that this is the king of Hybern.
My suspicions are proved correct when Feyre says "What do you want Hybern?"
Her voice is sharp, commanding. She still hasn't shed the tone she adopted to speak to the mortals. The ones that are still behind our lines, visibly shaking with fear.
Hyber chuckles. "What do you think dear? There are humans on Prythian soil, uninvited. I do believe that that is cause for war under the treaty."
I watch Feyre's father's face lose the little colour it had left. This obviously hadn't been part of the plan.
But Feyre doesn't miss a beat. In a second she turns to the three mortals and says "I officially request your presence in Prythian."
Then she turns back to Hybern. "Good enough for you?"
Hybern smirks. "Dear, you can't issue that request. It can only come from a high lord or a king."
Feyre smiles, suddenly aware that he doesn't know her secret. "But what about a high lady?" she asks, her voice suddenly dripping sweetness.
Hybern's eyebrows furrow slightly, then his face expands with comprehension, and rage.
"As far as I'm aware," Feyre continues "A formal invitation by any ruler in the Fae relms to a human grants them dipplomatic immuity and nullifies that part of the treaty. Unless I'm mistaken?"
At that she directs a quick glance towards Rhys, who shakes his head. Feyre nods, content. "Well then, I think you can leave now." she says to Hybern.
He is visibly shaking with anger now. He darts his glance around our party, obviously trying to find some excuse to attack. His eyes land on me. For a second I see real confusion cross his features, then he smiles. That smile is possibly the most frightening thing I've seen from his so far.
He snaps his fingers and beside him appears a second male, this one even less outwardly remarkable than the king. But at the sight of him, my friends (when did I begin to think of them as friends?) take an involontary step back. All except Amren, who stands, frozen and pale faced, exactlly where she was.
"Jurian" Mor whispers, anger seething beneath her voice.
Amren whips her head around. "Jurain?" she's almost shreiking, a panic and terror that I have never heard before in all my life colouring her voice "That isn't Jurain you fool!"
The male, Jurain, smiles. "Hello Amren darling." he says "It's been a while."
"Intentionally" she says to him, all the fight drained out of her.
Jurian's smile slips just a fraction, and with a wave of his hand her lips are sealed shut. Feyre is looking between the pair in confusion. Then her glance travels to Hybern, who smiles at her sweetly. "I truly thought I had brought Jurian back you know. For a while."
Not-Jurian smiles "The thing is though, Jurian is so weak. And that cauldron, what it does is open the door for a spirit to reenter the body. It does't care what spirit pops in. All I did was beat Jurain's spirit to the punch."
"Then who the hell are you?" Rhys says.
Jurian smiles. "I'm sure Aelin here would love to tell you all about me."
I freeze. Across the feild I see Rowan do the same. "Aelin?" Feyre asks, "Who the hell is Aelin?"
Jurain's smile becomes feral. He shifts his gaze back to me. "You haven't told them, oh you naughty girl. Though I suppose you always did like your secrets."
I can feel everybody's eyes on me, especially Feyre's. "I did what I had to do." I tell him softly. "I did what would keep us safe, keep Terrasen safe. Now how do you know any of this?"
His brows crease together for a second. "You don't recognize me dear? I'm hurt, wounded. You have wounded me."
With a look towards me that tells me we'll be discussing my lies later, Feyre turns back to Jurian. "Cut the crap, whoever you are. If you know her, tell us your name. If you don't, stop playing games."
"But games are so much fun!" he whines, "Besides, I want her to guess. Who do you know, your majesty, that can jump between realms, pop in and out of different bodies? Who do you know that would enjoy this?"
A lead weight drops into my stomach, and I can't get enough air into my lungs. Rowan's face is so white he looks like a corpse. I meet his gaze, and I know we have reached the same conclusion. But it's impossible. Utterly impossible.
"It can't be" I say, my voice barely a whisper, "We defeated you. I watched you burn."
"So sweet of you to be concerned my dear, but as you can see I escaped. I won't lie, you left me weak, so weak, but I got stronger. And now I'm back. And I want you to say my name. I want to see your face when you realize that it was all for nothing, that even after all you lost, all you sacrificed, I still survived. And I brought you across dimensions, just so you could see that I'm still here and that one day I will come back for Terrasen. I want you to say my name!" His voice is crazed, the look in his eyes no different.
I feel as though I'm going to be sick, my breath is coming in choking gasps. I can see the concern and suspicion on the faces of every one around me, then I say it, because I can't hold out a moment more. And the word feels like acid on my tongue.
"Erawan."
