Grim Reapers ; people who lead you to the afterlife
With so many people in the world, all of them thinking different and all of them believing in different things, the term had become something else within itself. It wasn't just their job to lead the dying to the afterlife, it was also their decision on when the human would die. They were the lawmakers of death, they were the people who saw it through from the very few seconds a human starts having signs of death to when they safely make it to heaven or hell. In the end, everything rested in their hands.
But there was one rule that all grim reapers had to obey by, in no one shape or form must a grim reaper fall in love with a human being.
Naruto sighed as he looked at his watch. Rain poured down as he looked at the grave of the man he had recently been watching over. People huddled together under umbrellas as they looked at the casket that lay in front of them. He had just seem the man go off into the pits of hell yet on earth, people still believed that the man that he just sent off was a saint and was going to heaven. He sometimes wondered why people couldn't see the horrid personalities of one's being under the smile that was just a facade to survive the world that they lived in.
He wanted to leave, he wanted to go back home where he belonged but he knew it was his job to see each and every person off. Even if the person he sent off to hell was a horrible person, he still had to respect the fact that the man was dead. One by one he watched as the guests made their way out, their heads out with tears in their eyes and umbrellas over their heads despite the fact that their faces were already soaking wet with their own tears. It would have been better for them to not use umbrellas so they could hide their tears.
Walking around the graveyard, he made sure no one else was there before walking out of the black iron gates and pulling them to a close to signify that his work was done. He had come to the place so many times, he wondered if one day he would actually watch the funeral of someone he cared about. But he knew that he wasn't allowed to make personal connections with humans so it was easier to send them off.
"What were you thinking about?" called a voice beside him. Naruto stopped in his tracks and stood still for a second before turning on his heels and looking at his best friend. Sasuke sat on a wet bench as people walked past them with umbrellas on top of them being unable to see them. No matter what, a human that was living could not see a grim reaper, it was only those with the eyes of death known as a third eye to humans, and those who were on their deathbed would be able to see grim reapers.
"You know we aren't supposed to be making personal connections to humans so why even think about caring about someone you're leading to death? They won't even remember you anyways once they reach the gates of heaven or hell. The funeral ended ten minutes ago too, you should have been back five minutes ago" said Sasuke in a slightly annoyed tone.
Naruto sighed as he looked away, "I know but have you ever wondered what it would be like to be human? They live out their days as if there's nothing wrong with the world, they're blinded to everything around them and then there's us. We're stuck with the dirty work by the end of it and sometimes we get the worst people who want immortality. It's stupid. It wasn't even like I was doing anything bad, I just wanted to walk around for a little bit"
Sasuke looked at him for a second, "Naruto, you've walked down this street at least a hundred times. You know this town like the back of your hand so don't act like you're new to this place. And whether you like it or not, we have to put up with those types of people. Trust me, I hate them too but it's what we signed up for. We have to keep doing our job until we turn old or until we quit but then we can't make money"
Naruto rubbed the back of his head. He knew what Sasuke was telling him was nothing but the truth but he wanted to escape the truth more than anything. Sasuke sighed as he stood up, "Come on. Sakura is at home right now and she's waiting for the both of us. She made snacks for you since she knows you've had a long day. It's your first job in a long time, so let's go home and eat a little bit" he told him.
