I continue to walk across the grass to the front entrance. I open one of the big glass door and step inside. Yeah, big is an understatement. Tables lined in rows everywhere. The tables are occupied by students catching up after a long summer chatting their heads away. Smile, laughs, jokes, and stories everywhere. I can almost picture Kate and I sitting at one of the tables with our few friends. Gosh I want to go home. I keep thinking about what Mom said, just give it a chance.

There is a huge wall across the commons with a projector screen. Along the walls are trophies of all sorts of sports and certificates everywhere filling the glass cases hold prized possessions of the teams. I look to my right, there’s the office doors. And to my left is a huge set of doors that looks like it would lead into a Gym. Sure enough at the top reads “Gymnasium”.

I sigh and take the path to my right into the office. It’s full of people getting schedules and locker numbers and stuff. I quietly wait in line. I get dirty looks and looks from people like I don’t belong there. When it was my turn I walk up to the desk.

“Um I’m new here and I was wondering where I could get a schedule.” I say in a crackly shy voice.

The secretary smiles at me. “Don’t look so shy sweetie, people here won’t bite. Now, for me to get your schedual I kinda need your name.” She says bringing up my feelings slightly less nervous now.

“Oh right, Joanne Smith.” I say back to her with more confidence in my voice.

“Here ya go” She hands me a schedule and a map of the school. “If you ever need anything or get lost don’t be afraid to come to me and ask or just ask another student they will surely help you.” She says warmly. I mouth a thank you and walk out the door back into the noisy commons.

I look down at the schedule.

I walk towards the west wing where I was told that was the high school wing. The school is split between the middle and the high school because of budget cuts in the states. I thought it was pretty weird but I went along with it, there was nothing I could do anyway. “Okay locker 413 combination 32-14-21.” I repeat to myself so I don’t forget it while trying to find my locker. I walked passed many many lockers before I finally found the right one. Now if I can get it open I should be golden.

I start to twist the knob round and round entering the numbers on the little marks. And to my surprise it opens first try. Sucsess! I open it slowly not excited to see the nastiness that most lockers are. I open it all the way up and again surpirse that it looks brand new. Well, I shouldn’t be that surprised this school is like a school for the riches. Looks not even a decade old! Everything is in great condition on the inside.

I set down my backpack and start pulling my notebooks and locker decorations out. After I finish making my locker mine I grab my notebooks and my binder for History. I take one long look at all the pictures of Kate and I that I’ve pinned to my locker. I take one big look at the one of us at Solo and Ensemble in the 5th grade.

Two girls stand smiling holding brass instruments. One brown haired girl taller than the other, holding a Euphonium. Two blue medals pinned on each of their shirts. Next to her was a slightly shorter blonde haired girl sharing the same smile but holding a trombone in one hand. The girls had their hands locked together.

A mixture of pain and happiness washes across me as I think about that day, I remember it like it was just yesterday. We had just gotten done with our duet at the state solo and Ensemble that we competed in for years. We had gotten a One rating on it. The highest award you can receive for playing a solo or ensemble. We both had gotten one’s on our solo’s as well. We were so happy with ourselves.

As I stand there for a minute thinking about that day I remember I have to get to class. I look at my map and head downstairs to History. After about five minutes of searching for my class I find the place I’m looking for. I walk in to see some students chatting and just standing around. I look up and the board and it says to stand at the front and wait to be seated, so I follow directions.

I stand there for about three four minutes when I hear this very loud obnoxious sound that sound like a bull horn. It only blows for about 5 seconds then stops. I figure it’s their bell when students come piling into the classroom and I can see the halls were starting to empty. After the second one the teacher clears his throat and the room grows silent.

He started calling off names and pointing to seats. The students belonging to the names walk over to the different seats and sit down. As he goes up and down the aisles naming off the different names he finally call my name. I walk across the room getting weird looks from various students and glares from others. I look to my right at my table partner.

He was a brown hair blue eyed tallish kid. He looked like one of those “Bad Boys” that I tend to steer clear of to stay out of trouble. He sure looked like he could cause a lot of it. However, he was kinda...cute. I shook my head at that thought. I promised myself that I wasn’t going to get involved with boys this year. Anyway, I’m leaving this summer and I’ll be back in Luther to my ex boyfriend Jason and him and I will live happily ever after.

First period couldn’t go by any faster. I really don’t see the point of first days. All we do is get loads of syllabuses and contracts to sign, while the teachers explain what they don’t want us doing during that year. Pointless if you ask me.
