michael was actually, legitimately enjoying himself, while catching up with his best friend and ex.
calum, luke, and michael were all sprawled out on the sofa, video game controllers tightening every once in awhile in all three sets of hands.
"got any beer, mike?" calum asks suddenly, sitting up a bit.
michael turned his head to his friend, nodding quickly, "yeah, yeah, top shelf in the fridge, man."
calum grinned widely, "sweet."

four beers later, michael felt evenmore relaxed, and when calum brought up an unexpected question, michael was more than happy to answer it, truthfully this time around.
"so what did happen between you two in high school anyways?" calum asked, looking at both michael and luke.
"i mean michael just told me that he wanted to find someone better, but that was obviously a lie, i mean the dude was heartbroken for months. right, michael?"
michael rolled his eyes, swatting at calum's chest, just resulting in the dark-haired boy to let out a rather unmanly squeak of a giggle.
luke licked his lips.
"u-uh are you gonna tell the story or should i?" he asked, resulting in michael shaking his head.
"i got this."
-
(flashback)
michael and luke were undeniably in love with each other, they in fact had just shared their nine month anniversary the night before.
it had been a very sweet time, their anniversary night, but let's just say that luke's bum ached more than a little bit every time he stood up the next morning.
just a few days later, luke had told michael to meet him at the park, near the swing-set.
michael happily obliged, wondering what his beautiful blonde boyfriend of nine months had planned for the two in the park.
michael had woken up with a smile on his face, walked to the park with a smile on his face, and when he saw his beautiful luke standing by the swing set, he got an even bigger smile on his face.
he always did when he saw luke, he couldn't help it.
upon walking closer, he saw that luke looked a bit- nervous, which made michael's smile turn into a worried frown.
he approached luke with his opening arms, luke quickly crawling into them.
nuzzling his face in the blonde's fluffy locks, he sighed contently, and luke did too, his breath shaking.
"so is everything alright, lukey?"
luke sighed heavily, biting his lip with nervousness as he pulled away.
"i, uh- n-no actually," he stuttered, biting his lip so hardly michael was afraid it'd start to bleed.
michael visibly tensed, a lot more worried than he was before.
"what is it?" he murmered, looking into luke's blue eyes.
they started to tear up, and luke bursted out the next words so quickly michael didn't even hear him at first.
"i'm leaving to new york tomorrow and i didn't wanna tell you because you seem so happy and your happiness means everything to me but i don't know if this is gonna work out anymore michael. i love you. and i uh i - i have to go."
then was when luke left michael, running off from his boyfriend into the nearly setting sun.
leaving michael to start sobbing, choking on the very air that kept him alive.
luke was moving to the united states?
he hadn't told michael?
he wasn't gonna at least t r y and stay with michael?
after realizing those three important facts, michael decided he needed to make something up, fast.
he couldn't let everyone know how broken he'd just become.
he couldn't let anyone know that the fucking love of his life just left him without even saying a mere goodbye.
he didn't want to be looked at and classified as the poor loser who'd gotten dumped at school.
so he made something up.
said him and luke just "didn't have that spark" anymore.
he did of course tell everyone the one true fact, though, that luke and his family had moved to new york. to the united states.
apparently luke's successful business man of a dad had gotten a new job there; was what michael had heard from his mother.
michael told his mum, told everyone a lie.
the only person who knew the truth was michael himself, and he knew he'd never be the same after that day in the park.
he was never the same after luke had left him, but he had to make sure people thought he was fine.
so at school, in public, everywhere michael went after the breakup day in the park, he put on a fake smile.
fake smiles had become his specialty.
he was okay, he'd tell everyone.
but he wasn't okay, he realized that late at night sometimes when he'd start sobbing uncontrollably, the only thing on his mind a certain blonde boy who had broken his heart.
just three days after their nine month long anniversary.
sad much?
happy new year.
