PROLOGUEThere was darkness everywhere.
Black, thick matter. It was not inside you, but it felt as if it was.
Truly, there was none of the darkness inside you, nor any light.
There was nothing there when you felt for it except a small soul that you couldn't even see. But even that wouldn't keep you warm from the cold dark world around you.
It stabbed at you like knives, but you weren't cold. In fact, it wasn't truly cold at all; but your soul was colder than ice water.
You could not see it, but the soul was glowing, trying not to let you fade. You wanted to thank it but lacked the ability to talk, to move, or to breathe through the infinite darkness suffocating you.
Suddenly the firm grip of the void released you. You drew in a long breath. Your lungs were working again and felt comfortably cool, like dipping your hand in a stream and feeling the water rush through your fingers, even though the air was drier than a desert.
Suddenly, sound. It was a quiet giggle. Your now moving body instinctively scrabbled to follow the voice, desperate for human contact, but it was still too sore and weak to get far. Your bones were hollow, and they felt like they would shatter into a thousand little fragments like your mind had.
"Well, well...! What have we here?" It was a rather strange voice, with a dull, broken ring to it. Your eyes were sealed shut, but you somehow knew they were grinning.
"Where am I?" The rather feminine voice was deeper than yours, but similar. It had a mocking tone to it, but they had just copied your thoughts.
Where were you? You couldn't remember any events before seeing the huge mountain before you. You couldn't even remember why you had gone there in the first place.
"Oh." They laughed quietly. "Don't you remember? Those who climb the mountain never return!"
"You know, I'm absolutely ecstatic to find out what you'll do with this." You opened your eyes slowly. Nothing changed, everything was all black.
Except for the child standing before them. Their eyes were covered by their thick, brownish-russet hair.
Why was there a faint glow of red behind it?
You instantly tried to push that thought away. By all logical means eyes could not glow, nor could they be red without contacts.
But the glow was still there, just like your fear.
"For you see, we are like Yin and Yang."
"You are the light, and I am the dark." They twirled a knife on their finger like a basketball player would his ball and gave you a twisted smile.
"One cannot exist without the other. If I left you, you would soon enough fade." They looked away, frowning a bit. A chilly wind blew through you. Your skinny, bony frame shuddered.
"And if you faded..." Their hair was lifted from their eyes by the breeze. Two red eyes gleamed at you. "I would fade."
"But let's get back on track, shall we?" You didn't answer. There didn't seem to be time for your vote in the matter. "I want to show the aftermath of you."
"You can't remember it..."
"But you've done something terribly wrong."
"What's the matter, Yang? You scared?"
"Good."
Everything went white and numb. Their words echoed through your mind.
A Yin and Yang could never truly be split apart.
