Chapter 8
Jailbreak
It had taken thirteen guards, four attempts, and seven feet of rope to get Sonya into the royal dungeon. And even by the end of that, two guards were knocked unconscious, the rope was fraying at the edges, along with matching rope burns on her wrists, and she was pretty sure she maimed at least three of them for life. It was surprising how dangerous nails and teeth can be in a desperate situation.
They had literally thrown her into the cell, eager to get rid of this mad elf who was causing them so much trouble. Her head hit the stone walls with a sickening thud. She winced as the impact jolted though her body. If she kept this up, her head would soon be covered in welts.
Know that it would do no good, but wanting her captors to know that she wasn’t about to give up, she threw herself at the door, banging at the wood and screaming incoherent words of rage. When she was finally drained in every possible way, she sunk down against the wall as the emotions came upon her. She began to cry.
At first it was just silent tears, but it quickly became shoulder wracking sobs. The pain of Molko’s death and her brother’s capture and perhaps even death began to weigh on her. She felt as though two parts of her were missing, and she didn’t know were to start looking for them.
When she could finally breath again, she looked around the room, and saw something in the corner move. Then a ragged voice whispered in a voice so quiet that she almost missed it. “Friend or foe...” the voice whispered.
Any other being would have thought it was a question, but not Sonya. She knew the ways of the night, and with night came secrets of all sorts, secrets that could not be shared lightly. “You may not know...” she replied, voice barely a murmur.
“But remember this single test...” the figure stood up.
“When come the creatures of night...”
“Those who stand and fight...”
“Will be the ones you want by your side,” they finished the old rhyme together. It was a password of sorts, one that was not well known. More than once an Elf Thieves only identification had been that rhyme. Instantly Sonya knew that this was a friend, but nothing could prepare her for what happened next. When the figure stepped out into the light, her heart stopped for a moment.
It was Remaduce.
All the Quarries in the world couldn’t keep her from his arms when her eyes met her brother’s. More tears came, but they were tears of joy, tears of hope. And when they finally slowed, she could only stutter out, “W-what c-could you have d-done that was so s-s-stupid to get caught?”
Remeaduce gave a bit of a sheepish smile and said, “Well, I kind of got caught with an elven charm...”
She stared at him for a moment in complete and utter astonishment, then began laughing. She didn’t know why, but once she started, she couldn’t stop.
“Stop laughing!” Remaduce exclaimed. “What did you do to get in here?”
That stopped her laughter in an instant. “Revenge,” she replied vaguely.
Remaduce looked stunned. “Sonya! You went after revenge on your own? What in the world possessed you to do that?”
“They killed Molko,” she said shortly.
Remaduce pulled her back into his strong embrace. “Oh, Sonya,” he whispered.
She just let him hold her tight.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Darkness had consumed the night when he came. There seemed to be no light in the world that night, just a sea of black. Sonya had been trying to sleep on the three strands of straw that was meant to be used as a bed when the wooden door creaked open. Torchlight streamed in from the hallway and the silhouette of a figure stood at the door.
“Come,” the voice whispered, “Come and don’t ask questions.”
Quickly she bit back the questions that instantaneously jumped onto her tongue and went to wake Remaduce.
When she shook him awake, his eyes widened and he lunged at the stranger who had come to rescue them, knocking him to the ground. As Sonya tried to break them apart, she marveled at how two beings could fight so silently. Just barely a scuffle here, a hiss of pain there, she heart almost no sound at all.
She finally pried her brother off of the stranger, she had to hold him back as he fought to break free of her grip. “Remaduce! What’s your problem?” she asked as she tried to restrain him.
“Don’t you know who that is?” he spat out. “He turned me in when I was on the streets, he hunted elves along with the rest of the humans, he is the King’s son!”
Sonya spun around to face their rescuer. A thought struck her, He led the attack that killed Molko. She felt a surge of disgust, but all the same she walked up to him and commanded, “Look me in the eyes.” When his eyes met hers, she nodded. “We will go with you,” she whispered, then turned to her stunned brother.
“Remaduce have you seen his eyes? I mean up close?” she asked him in a low voice so that the King’s son could not hear her. When Remaduce shook his head she continued with a sigh, “He is not the King’s son, Remaduce.”
“What!?” Remaduce exclaimed, “But he has to be! I have seen him with the King himself, and you know I would not forget that face!”
Yes, she knew he would not forget any face of the royal family. After all, the King had killed their parents right in front of a twelve-year-old Remaduce’s eyes. “Remaduce,” she whispered, “his eyes are grey, but they have green around the pupil.” She sighed again and pinched the bridge of her nose. “Things just got a lot more complicated, brother. That boy cannot be the King’s son. He is a half-elf.”
(A/N Haha! So Dearekk and Sonya finally meet up without one trying to kill the other! Sorry for the cheesy riddle though... Comment! Please! I know that voting is way easier than commenting but I want to know how I'm doing. :) Until next time!)
