A couple of days later, Brody, Megan and I meet Kyra at our favorite spot in the woods. It's became our favorite place to hang out. It occurs to me that I haven't been to the lake at the edge of the town recently, where I hung out with Brody when I first came to Ranley at the end of last summer. I remember wondering if that was Brody's safe and private space, and I decide not to ask him why we haven't hung out there since. I think everyone deserves a place they can go to think that's just for them, that their friends don't know about.

“So, New Year's resolutions, anyone?” Kyra asks us, leaning on a log.

“Stop trusting assholes who cheat on me at parties,” Megan spits out her words, sounding more hurt and angry than I've ever heard her sound.

Brody found out last night what had happened at the party to make Megan look so upset and Kyra look so mad when we counted in the New Year with them.

After Anthony had disappeared at Beth's party, she went looking for him. It didn't take long for her to find him. He was in Beth's parents room, with a girl called Rose, both of them shirtless, sucking each others faces.

Megan didn't say anything to either of them, she just ran out of the room and sobbed in to Kyra's arms. Kyra instantly figured out what had happened. She went looking for him, and when she found him, snatched his vodka out of his hand and poured it over him and his douchebag Abercrombie & Fitch shirt.

Brody explained all this to me yesterday when we were tending to the horses. "Kyra knew Anthony was bad news, and I didn't believe her." He had sounded disgusted in himself. I assured him it wasn't his fault, and that he had no idea Anthony was going to hurt Megan.

We sit in silence for a few moments before Megan demands we share our New Year's resolutions.

“Stop trusting assholes who cheat on my little sister at parties,” Brody says. We all laugh.

“I still haven't decided on mine. When I think of a good one, I swear I'll let you all know,” Kyra vows.

My turn now. “I've never believed in New Year's resolutions. If you want to change yourself, or change something in your life, why wait until the New Year to do it?”

Kyra roles her eyes and tells me I'm being stuck up. Megan acts as if it's the most profound thing anyone has ever said and ever will say. Brody doesn't say anything.

When I get back to the barn, I turn on my laptop and I have a Facebook message from Ryan, my best friend from back in Denver.

I HAD AN IDEA BEFORE

Ruben Taylor 21:12

If this is about something new and exciting you're trying with Stephen, I don't want to know.

Ryan is the type of friend who insists on telling me everything about his sex life completely unprompted all the time. His 'friend with benefits', Stephen, is apparently very 'creative' when it comes to sex. This results in Ryan messaging me, about things I really do not want to know about, on a regular basis.

Ryan Harrison 21:13

Fuck you, no, I was wondering if a few of us could come down and visit you on the farm

Oh God. I've been dreading this day. I love Ryan and everyone else, but for some reason, I don't think having them all at Ranley would be a good idea.

Ruben Taylor 21:14

I can just visit you in college sometime.

Ryan Harrison 21:15

Yeah but you cant visit all of us in every individual college we're in unless you feel like roadtripping or something

Ruben Taylor 21:15

I don't know if Vicky and Frank will be comfortable with having you all here.

Ryan Harrison 21:16

We wouldnt be in the way, we would just sit in your barn and then hang out with you and your country bumpkin friends when you did

I resent him calling them country bumpkins, but I decide not to say anything. I realize there is no way I'm getting out of this. Ryan always knows when I'm lying, even over the internet. Back in Denver, if he wanted me to come over to his place and I didn't want to, and I would make up an excuse to stay home, he'd know I was lying.

Ruben Taylor 21:18

Alright, I'll talk to Frank and Vicky about it and let you know.

Ryan Harrison 21: 19

I LOVE YOU!! It will probably be spring break so you have plenty of time to prepare for us

The only preparation I will have to do is mental preparation.
