Back at the barn, Ryan is awake. Charlotte is taking a shower.

“Guess what?” I say as I sit down next to him on the couch.

“You've realized you're madly in love with Bro?” he suggests, calling him Bro to be patronizing rather than to give him a cute nickname. I wonder if Ryan really does suspect something is going on between Brody and I, or if he's just joking around. Either way, I'll probably tell him about the situation before he leaves, anyway, as long as Brody is cool with it.

“No. We're going clubbing tonight.”

He looks at me skeptically. “Clubbing? In Ranley?”

“We're driving in to Dallas,” I explain. “Brody has an interview at Stanford, so he wanted to celebrate.”

“Sounds great, but do you even have a fake ID?”

“According to Brody, no one gets checked for ID in the place he wants to go to. It's some gay club called Kiki's or something.

“There's a gay scene in Texas? Wow,” Ryan says, shocked.

“Apparently.”

“Whose car are we taking?” he asks.

“Yours. If we take mine, Vicky and Frank will notice it's gone.”

“You mean, they don't know their precious angels are going to a gay night club?”

“I'm pretty sure they know their kids aren't precious angels at this point, but no, there's no way they'd let them go clubbing. If they even mentioned going to a gay club, I think the entire farm would burst in to flames.”

“Okay, we'll take my car. You DD?” DD is Ryan talk for designated driver.

“It depends if Charlotte's coming and if she wants to drink.”

With that, Charlotte steps out of my bathroom in clean clothes and a towel around her head. “I heard my name mentioned,” she says.

I explain the plan to Charlotte.

“I don't really feel like drinking, but of course I'll come along and drive there and back.”

“Okay, let's get ready then, we're leaving at six,” I say, and stand up to go take a shower myself.
