The next morning, I go with Brody and Megan to the Kennerley house to face up to their parents with them. Besides, I was the one who was attacked. The hate crime report has been filed because of an attack on me, although I'm sure Brody is mentioned in the report.
Brody lets us in with his key. Frank sits on a sofa in the living room, staring at a painting on the wall. Through the archway in to the dining room I see Vicky pouring a bowl of cereal.
“You're not going to school today,” Frank says flatly. I look at Brody. Neither him or Megan dare argue.
“Dad?” Brody sits beside his father. He doesn't respond, just carried on staring at the painting.
“Dad?!”
“Don't talk to me. I know everything. Word travels fast in this town. You are nothing to me, you understand?” He stands up so he is facing both me and Brody. He is talking to both of us now. “Thought you could hide this from me? The police are coming over this evening. You can choose to file a report, but I highly advise you don't. You pretend this had nothing to do with- I can't even bring myself to say it.”
I look him dead in the eye. “Your son being in love with another man?”
That sets him off. He comes closer to me and looks as if he's ready to grab my throat. “Don't you fucking dare say that to me, Taylor. I trusted you. I let you in to my home, and you do this to my son? You make me sick. Your hippie parents might tolerate your infliction, but I won't have it. After the police come over tonight, I want you out of here.”
I feel my conscience screaming at me to leave now and avoid further trouble, but I can't. Not after everything I know about this man.
“Fine by me. Also, I'm sure social services would love to know all about how you're probably going to beat your son to a pulp later on.”
And for the third time this year, I'm punched in the face.
Before I get in to yet another fight, and possibly end up in hospital again, Brody and Vicky stand in between us. I back away from Frank, who tries to throw more punches at me.
“DAD, STOP IT!” Megan cries.
“You stay away from my kids, you hear me? Pack your stuff and never come back here again!” Frank roars.
I leave the house.
