Chapter Two

The next day, Hazel leans over to my desk and hands me a note. To a normal person, it just looks like mindless gibberish, but as an expert in the HD code, I can read it just fine.
It read 'Hehd y ,hdhohdw ahdre hdyohd uhd? Ha hds thd he wahd rhdde nhd dohd nhde anyhdth ihdng ehdls hde?'

It's a simple code really, string all the letters together, remove all 'hd's and separate it into coherent words.
'Hey, how are you? Has the warden done anything else?' It read. I answer on the back
'Nohd t yhd et, bhdu ti hdt's onhdl y ahd mhdat tehd er ohdf timhd e'
She glances at it and looks at me with sorrow in her eyes. The Warden beats almost every kid here at the orphanage, but I always seem to get the worst of it. Hazel hates it, but she can't do anything against it. No one can.

Two days later is visiting day. The day when rich families come to adopt a child. I find them annoying. They always look at Hazel and I as if we are nothing. Today was different though. We are in our dorm and Hazel and I are sitting at my desk, not bothering to acknowledge the newcomers.
We gave up after two years of disapproving looks. So we were very surprised when someone tapped me on my shoulder.
I turn around to see the smiling face of a female lioness.
She gasps and her smile slips from her face as she takes in my bruised face. The Warden had beaten me bloody that very morning and the bruises were still fresh on my face.
I search her face, waiting for the look of disgust, the foul words to slipout of her mouth, but, she only seems to look... sad?
"Oh, sweetie, who did this to you?!" She exclaims. I jump. No one has called me sweetie. Ever.
I am at a loss for words so Hazel answers for me.
"It was the Warden" She says.
The lioness looks very confused.
"I didn't know anything about a Warden..." She says
"It's what we call... Veronica" Hazel replied.
At that one name, everyone else in the room want silent. Most stares at us, some had to blink back tears.
The lioness takes a look around the room, then turns to her husband.
"Roland, we have to save him"
Him. Not them.
And it hit me that if I was taken away today, I would never see Hazel again.
My claws dig into the desk and I stare at Hazel helplessly.
"Dyl, now's your chance! You can be free" Hazel says.
"I can't leave without you!" I exclaim.
"Well, maybe we can work something out" says the Lioness.
I look up at her, she's holding something out to me.
Paper? She hands it to me and gives a nearly identical slip to Hazel. It read

This is to certify that Dylan Garroway has now been placed under legal guardianship of Roland and Carla Ashfern. Any dispute against this claim must be taken up in the court of law.

Hazel and I stare at eachother.
Adopted. We're being adopted!
