The seeker had begun his mission early tonight, anxious to fulfill his latest duty. He ran at blinding speed, sprinting through the woods and ignoring the extending branches as they sliced along his arms.
The wounds would heal anyway.
His eyes were fierce and grey now, shimmering against the moonlight in the October sky. He kept his glare forward, always ahead, searching out his target with sheer determination.
He only had a matter of time before it would be too late, and he increased his pace until he was just a flash across the forest. The object of his pursuit would not anticipate his attack. It could be no other way. If they became aware of his approach, the tracking would cease. He would have to retreat, or else his safety would surely be at stake. He was extremely outnumbered, and he was sharp enough not to expect that a predetermined battle would go in his favor.
So he ran, faster than a storm, toward the unsuspecting victim. The wind whipped his face, and tree limbs scraped his cheeks, but he never ceased moving forward, driving toward his mission.
Catching the scent of his prey, he finally slowed, stalking around behind a grouping of trees to fade into the shadows. From under the shade he could see the people, separated from the party inside, dancing merrily under a string of porch lights.
His eyes focused on their profiles, quickly identifying the two he was seeking out. Four silhouettes floated across the terrace, their bodies in perfect rhythm with the melody.
He heard a husky laugh as a man dipped his partner effortlessly. The woman’s black hair nearly touched the ground and the other two turned around to applaud their finale. They mingled a moment longer, the hunter waiting patiently just out of sight.
The dancers retreated toward the stairs now, leading themselves closer to their fate as they gathered on a stone bench out in the garden.
Their backs were turned to the hunter, giving him a faultless opportunity.
He inched closer, always cloaking himself under the cover of the trees, his footsteps inaudible to their ears.
The black haired woman stood, freezing the seeker in his tracks. She began walking gracefully back to the terrace, mumbling something about music as she made her way back into the party. He waited the length of a heartbeat until she was securely in the house before sauntering forward silently.
His eyes blazed, thinking of the crimes these two had surely committed. His vengeance was blinding as he crawled ahead to the garden. This was his job, his fate, and he was good at it. But it didn’t stop the rage from burning his insides each time he was in the presence of such evil.
Waiting for his moment, he stood a few feet away from the three. The extra kill would be unfortunate, but since she was in their company, he had to assume she was aware of their corruption. He leaned forward ever so slightly, and when their faces turned slightly in his direction, he attacked.
Bounding through the air, his teeth had already surfaced, and he collided with the bench at full force. The impact sounded like a two freight trains smashing angrily into one another.
The three figures stiffened, jumping up from where they had landed on the garden floor, their glittering eyes aflame. Once the recognition set in, they peeled their lips back in unison, revealing their pointed teeth.
Fighting three vampires at one time proved to be harder than the dark hunter had expected, each of them unyielding to his blows.
He had to focus on three sets of arms swinging wildly at him, threatening to scratch and claw their way through his flesh. One vampire jumped on his back, sinking its teeth into his shoulder blade, generating a screeching cry from his throat.
He grasped the vampire’s arm and swung him wildly around, smashing him into the side of a tree. With blinding speed, he flew over to the male and, using his fangs, ripped the flesh to shreds in an instant.
It took only seconds to conquer the one, but there were two more to worry about. The female was much stronger than he had expected, and was thoroughly enraged that the hunter had just defeated her mate.
She lunged on top of him, scratching the skin on his face with her nails, screaming wildly in revenge.
His hands clasped around her waist brutally, sending a tremor of pain through her stomach as he lifted her up and flew, grasping her as she kicked wildly in his hands. He raced with her toward the forest, two bodies soaring across the ground and colliding with the base of a birch tree. The force sandwiched the female between he and the tree, snapping her back. In the blink of an eye, her neck was slit and the hunter turned on the second male, wiping his mouth in defiant challenge.
They stood a few feet apart, staring at each other’s raging faces, waiting for the other’s first move.
With only a flinch, they were both up, soaring through the air towards one another, both releasing a deafening growl.
The scene played in slow motion for the seeker, as he watched the fury in the face of his prey. As the vampire got threateningly close, the smoke-eyed hunter slammed his fist against his prey, the sheer strength caving his torso inward. The last of the three fell to the ground lifelessly.
He had prevailed again.
Just because the sting of vengeance was still ripe in his veins, he leaned over the body, sinking his teeth into its neck and gulped in the dying blood. He yanked his fangs free with a rip, slashing the throat, as he did with all of them.
He licked the dripping blood from his lip and turned to examine the house.
It had all happened so quickly, the other female hadn’t even had time to come back out to witness the scene.
The music was still playing inside, the movement of people in the window confirming that they were still dancing.
No one suspected a thing.
He faded back, cloaked again by the forest. After lighting the match that he had pulled from his pocket, he flicked it onto the grass next to his victims and turned to race away, the fire licking madly behind him, engulfing the mangled bodies.
