Moonlight

Haiden must have returned sometime during the night as I lay there dreaming of the pursuit of that day.

I dreamed of flying, high in the sky, circling over a group of large black bears and swooping down to help Giada, Angelina, and Grace conquer the beasts. We stalked them, our prey, and they never seemed to notice us. They just continued to play in the trees, breaking branches and munching on them as a snack. We were inching closer toward the animals when finally they heard our footsteps, forcing us to make our move. The three of us were up in a flash, colliding with the bears with superior force. Just as we were beginning to gain control over our hunt, a figure came sprinting out from behind the trees, cloaked in a hood. Its face was hidden from sight with the exception of a pair of sparkling eyes that glowed white like the moon.

I paused, momentarily stunned, and the bear I was attached to brushed me off of him and turned to run, escaping into the forest. I was just regaining my balance as the figure grabbed me by the arm and threw me back to the ground. Lying in the wet grass, I was frozen in pain and could hear the footsteps of the stranger steadily approaching. Towering over me, the cloaked shadow reached down, its pale hand clawing for my skin.

Still deeply asleep, horrified of what the white eyed stranger might do, I felt something brush across the side of my cheek. The touch caused me to shoot up in bed, my piercing scream jolting me awake.

Haiden’s arms came around me quickly, holding me stiffly, fighting against the nightmare which was still playing through my mind.

“Shh…Adia, it’s okay. It’s just me.”

I blinked the grogginess away and my eyes finally focused on his perfect, angled face. His arms were surrounding me and seeing him, instantly the dream faded, calming my racing heart.

“Oh,” I panted, regaining my breath. “You scared me.”

“That’s an understatement,” he whispered. “You were having a nightmare, baby. You’re okay now.”

He smoothed my hair down, tucking that ever-loosened strand behind my ear.

If I hadn’t been so bleary, the tingle in my gut probably would have caused me to retract, but instead I welcomed it, cuddling closer to his chiseled chest. He was holding me so tight I could hear his breath in my ear as it went in and out. His heart beat pounded in my side, proving that he was as vulnerable as I when we got too close to each other. There was no way either of us could deny it now.

Shifting me onto the bed beside him, he smoothly unraveled my arms from his waist. He wrapped his arms around my legs, which were now folded in front of me.

“I heard you had an eventful day,” he grinned, relieved that my terror had subsided.

“I can fly,” I proclaimed drowsily.

He laughed quietly at that.

His fingers played lightly on my legs, tickling my skin.

“So how was your first real hunt?” he asked.

I moved, slightly, so that I could be more comfortable, and let out a deep yawn before beginning the tale of my day.

“It was incredible,” I began, blinking the sleep away.

“Giada got knocked over by the bear, and just about gave me a heart attack, but amazingly she got right back up.”

He watched me, listening intently as I described the way the girls switched from beautiful, petite-even fragile- into three hard and intimidating presences right before my eyes. I gave him all the details, from flying to conquering the prey, which I had ridiculously been afraid of at the beginning.
