In the seven months that had passed since the horrific trip to Paris, Haiden and I had grown incredibly close. As if we weren’t already. But it was different now. There were no more dark secrets, no more worries of what the other would think. There was only our love and an extreme happiness that we were both alive, and had defeated the leader of the French clan.

I felt indestructible.

For years Haiden had been seeking out the members of the clan of French vampires. He was terribly strong, more so than most, and could take on a group of those bloodthirsty, evil monsters single handedly. And he never stopped doing his job, especially now. He would still go out at night sometimes- making sure that none of the clan would get anywhere near the house- so that we could live our peaceful, every day existence.

I had been asking him for months to allow me to seek with him, but he continued to refuse. The topic had resulted in many arguments lately, and Haiden, at this point, would no longer speak about it. If it was ever brought up, he would simply turn around and pretend that he didn’t hear.

But I was determined. I knew that I could help him, that I was strong and capable enough to be an asset, but Haiden was worried that I would get hurt. I guess we had truly come full circle.

I had to give it to him, though- he was trying to protect me. It was only out of love that he wouldn’t allow me to be subjected to that kind of danger. I respected his position on it completely. I just didn’t agree.

I had decided long ago not to let his denial shake me. I was going to help him seek out the clan one way or another. Whether he liked it or not.

My birthday was also coming up in two days, and I was excited and hopeful as to what the celebration might bring. I knew that I wasn’t supposed to get anxious over gifts, and that it seemed a bit self-serving. But I couldn’t help it. Somewhere inside of me I hoped that Haiden would give me the gift I had wanted for so long now-to be allowed to work along side of him, fighting the French vampires.

I sat in the room that Haiden and I now shared- the room that had been mine since I came to live with this family. Sitting in front of the mirror, I brushed my long hair and dreamed about obliterating all things evil.

In the reflection, I saw Haiden slip into the bathroom and I smiled at him, lovingly. He bent down and wrapped his long arms around my waist and pressed his lips against my neck.

When he released me and stood back up, my head had gone dizzy, and he laughed at the reaction he had caused.

“It’s good to see I still make you weak in the knees,” he said, smirking.

Even though he was completely full of himself, I had to laugh. He drove me insane with his touch, and knew it-and was determined to keep it up, I could see.

“No, I just felt lightheaded for a moment,” I said sarcastically, “I must be catching a cold.”

I faked a cough and held my hand to my forehead to check my imaginary temperature.

He looked at me from under his dark, sweeping lashes and grinned mockingly.

“Vampires can’t catch colds,” he said as he twisted a lock of my hair in his fingers.

I looked at him with huge, innocent eyes.

“Maybe I’m the exception,” I suggested.

As if I had just presented him with some great challenge, his eyes went dark and he slid his hands under my arms, and lifting me to my feet with ease, and twisting me around to face him. In just seconds his mouth was on mine, and he had jerked me roughly against him so that I could feel every inch of his long frame across my body. He held me there long enough to have my blood boiling, just until I was aching for him to take me under, and then pulled away, leaving me breathless.
