As soon as they found out – that the police got the bodies mixed up we were quickly rushed to the hospital where we were met with mum in the bed. The other family were nowhere to be seen mostly because “Mrs. Wooldridge” wasn’t really her really name, she was called Miss. Yudashkin who was actually a Russian immigrant who had caused the accident and had unfortunately crashed into my mum’s car which had left her in a right state; thankfully my sweet sister –Chloe had been at nursery at the time so she was safe and sound. Anyway where was I, oh yeah, when we got to hospital we ran like cheetahs to the ward where my mum had been on and unsurprisingly the women police thought that was Miss. Russian women was actually my mother.
Ken and I were breathless by the time we reached the ward. Nurses were informed of our situation and were quite sympatric indeed. My mum had her own room which was painted a light creamy green colour which lifted your spirit up when you most needed it. The flowers which after some looking at were fake ones and made the room more homely like and not make you feel like you were in a hospital.
We both sat down and looked at her in happiness but mixed with shock because to find out the day before your mum was dead then the next day you find she is alive would shock anyone and mess with your head.
She had quite a few cuts in her face and one just above her eye was very deep indeed and nearly made me sick. That reminded me, I had touched my eye and the bruising had disappeared however my popped lip was still quite inflamed but the jet black colour had gone done a little and it was now more of a dark red colour now.
Anyway as I was saying I was sat next to my mum and all I could feel was relief that the fact she was alive and safe. After a few minutes Ken had decided to hold mum’s hand and I asked Ken if he wanted a few moments alone with his caring, loving and sweet sister who had loved him since the day he entered the world.
Ken simply replied “Yes, if you wouldn’t mind”
“Ok, do you want coffee or anything?”
“Water will do, please” His voice was soft even though you would think Ken was a hard man.
As I walked out the bright and inviting room I was once hit by the depressing atmosphere on the hospital- the clinical like space would make you feel out of place and in an alien environment.
I had mostly bad memories of the hospital as my mum was taken there a lot when I was around seven and Chloe was only a baby. Mum had only given birth to Chloe before she went on the drink as dad only left one week before mum was due. Dad left with his Thai bride and abandoned us just like that. I was only seven and I used to have to hide in my bedroom with a newborn baby crying like no tomorrow in my hands because all my mum was doing was shouting and banging on my door saying she wanted her baby but thankfully I was more intelligent than that so I just hid in my room with Chloe like all the time till she left the house for more booze.
In till my lovely sweet uncle Ken came to rescue us after a month. Since mum had not stopped drinking I decided to call for some help before I rang Ken so I asked for some help from Mr& Mrs Fung who were next door neighbours; they were an elderly Chinese couple in their 60s who were the kindest and most caring people you would ever meet. They used to help me feed Chloe and taught me everything on how to care for a baby and even on one occasion they let me sleep at there house since I was so concerned of mum hurting Chloe or I.
If you are thinking why didn’t they just report this to the social workers was because they understood if that they did Chloe and I would have been taken into care and probably have been split up and never see each other even again however the Fung’s were wonderful; a couple I will never forget!
After a month the Fung’s decided enough was enough and was worried of the likely hood my mother would have gone to an early grave if they didn’t do something as adults. Therefore I gave them Ken’s phone number and Ken came rushing here. Ken got my mum into ship shape first of all taking her to hospital a lot to get her pumped and within two months she became sober and that was it. Ken had to go back up north again to continue with his dream of opening restaurants all over the country.
