I don’t know how I got through the next day. I think I spent most of it dreaming of Alex. And planning what I was going to wear.
Because this was basically a date, wasn’t it?
My first real date with Alex Carter.
I remember going to bed, thinking how crazy it was. One moment, I was Cinderella. The next moment, I was kind of like Rapunzel. Locked in a tower, waiting for my love to rescue me.
Except, girls these days, were supposed to rescue themselves.
The only thing was, if it wasn’t for Alex, I wouldn’t be in trouble.
I drifted into a dreamless sleep, and leapt out of bed as soon as the alarm went.
I put on a pair of black flared jeans, reminiscent of Alex’s own jeans. And a cute top underneath a fur-lined leather jacket. Because it was definitely going to be cold out.
I really missed having Emily’s input. I know she would have told me if those clothes were suitable or not.
Thinking about Emily made me sad.
I didn’t want to be sad. So I didn’t think about it.
I did my hair up in a very Pride and Prejudice kind of way. I thought it would probably be best not to have loads of hair flapping round my face when I was climbing out the window.
Climbing out the window… Oh, gosh. That meant I couldn’t wear my high heels!!
I thought hard… I had a pair of really cool black leather boots. They might look good as well as be practical.
I zipped them up, then took a deep breath. I felt like a criminal. I looked like a trained assassin, all dressed in black!
And I felt nervous.
Because this wasn’t just a first date.
This was a forbidden first date!

I was perched on my window sill, the rim digging into my backside, waiting for Alex. I kept checking my watch. I was early, but it felt like he was late. I thought again about how weird this was. And also how romantic.
“Morgan?” hissed a voice, making me jump.
“Alex!”
A ladder appeared under my nose, and I quickly clambered down.
“You look beautiful,” Alex said, smiling. I could see the silver moon reflected in his eyes. He looked beautiful himself. I couldn’t tell him that, though. I tongue-tied in his presence.
“Thanks,” I whispered, blushing.
“So…” Alex said, slowly. He took my hand and we started to stroll. “Obviously, we can’t go anywhere. Shops are all closed. You know, for a first date I kind of thought we’d go to the pictures, y’know? Traditional. But… That didn’t really work out… So… Uh…” He dug around in his jacket pocket and brought out a bar of chocolate. “Here.”
I took it and broke a bit off. “Thanks.”
The stars were all out, sparkling like jewels in the sky.
“On the other hand… No people means no interruptions… So, technically, we can go anywhere we want and do anything we want. I thought we could go stargazing in the park. Though you will have to climb over the fence, since it‘ll be locked, but…”
I looked at Alex and smiled. Maybe he was right. Maybe anything was possible. It certainly felt that way, when I was with him.
*
I had been in the park so often, I didn’t think there could possibly be anything I hadn’t seen before.
But I was wrong.
The world at night was so different from how it was during the day. Stars were sparkling, the moon was ducking behind the clouds. Alex’s hand was in mine, and all the time there was an air of peace and stillness I had never felt before.
The whole thing just felt so right.
And that was even before Alex kissed me.
“Promise me something,” he whispered.
“Anything…” I replied (rather recklessly, to be honest!)
“After all this has blown over, after they’ve forgotten about the alleged cheating…”
“Mmm?”
“Promise me we’ll start going out properly.”
I smiled. “I promise.”
Alex looked at his watch. “One in the morning. I’d better get you back home.” He wrapped his arm around my shoulder. I sighed with happiness. Maybe I’d find a way of proving we were innocent, maybe I wouldn’t.
Right then, it didn’t matter. Alex and I had the whole of the summer holidays in front of us. When we weren’t grounded, we’d go out properly. As long as we knew the truth, as long as we loved each other, it would be alright.
