KYLE'S POV:
"Laurel wake up, you little biatch!" Carmen yelled at her sister. We were still in the hospital, two days and laurel has not woken up yet. Carmen's a mess, Lee's dead, Shaun's non stop calling the FPP and I'm pretty sure Megs is dead. It's all my fault. All of it. If I had not opened my big mouth, everything would be fine. "Kyle, what are you thinking?" Carmen asked me. she looked at me with worry, I must be pacing again. "Nothing." I mumbled to her. I just kept pacing. she looked at me and laughed "Bullshit! I know when you're lying, Kyle. so tell me the truth." she walked over to me and stared at me, her eyes coaxing the truth out of me.
"It's my fault. Now Alex has no one to save him and Megs is rolling around in her grave. And it's probably a very shallow one at that." I blurted out. Carmen stared at me, and then slapped me across the face. Hard. "first of all, Megan is alive! I would know if my best friend is dead! second of all, if you think it's your fault then go do something about it! go to Mississippi then!!" Carmen yelled at me and then quickly returned to her sisters side. I thought for a moment. I could go to Mississippi, it would be hard but I could go. It would take about 6 hours, I could be their by tomorrow morning. "My dad would kill me." I suddenly said after a long silent moment, making Carmen jump. "If you don't go, Alex's dad is going to kill him. literally." Carmen stated, so simply. "If you're going to go, go now because Shaun will be here any moment." she stated. I looked out the window to the hospital room and sure enough I saw Dad heading towards us. He opened the door and quietly closed it behind him. "Son, it's my turn to see Laurel. doctor said only two people at once, remember?" my dad said, smiling softly at me. "sure thing Dad, I'm going back to the hotel anyway. I'm tired." I lie through my teeth. for the first time in my life, I lied directly to my fathers face. "you okay, Kyle? you look Pale." he stated. I knew I wouldn't get away with this, he's trained to spot liars. suddenly Carmen spoke up. "it's seeing Laurel like this, it's making me upset just thinking about it." She covered for me smoothly. "oh, well get some rest Kyle. I'll see you soon, be careful on the ride home okay?" my Dad looked at me with concern and I just smiled, biting my tongue to keep from telling the truth.
I backed out of the room and walked to the car, this is it. This could be the last time I see my father again. I silently sent a whisper up. "Wherever you are Megs, this is for you. I still love you." I got in the car, and started driving away from the hospital.
CARMEN'S POV:
I watched as Kyle left the room. I knew I would see him again, just like I knew that Megs was alive. I turned my attention back to my sister. "Laurel" I whispered silently to her. "I want you to know that I love you. you are my sister, no matter what genetics say." I looked at her pale face and just willed her to wake up. "Laurel, remember when I came to live with you and mom and dad? you told me you never had a sister before. And I told you we were cousins. remember what you said?" I asked her softly. I heard Shaun mumble from behind me. "Carmen?" "Carmen sweetie, it's time to go." I turned around and looked at him. I knew that expression, hopelessness, pain, grief, loss. "She's not dead." I said simply. "She's going to wake up and I'm not leaving until that happens." he just sighed and left the room. I went over to my chair by her bed and I grabbed her hand. "laurel, wake up! you little Nincompoop!!!" I yelled at her. "Please little Laurel Lollipop" I begged her. using her nickname that we gave her. I was around 12 and laurel was 9. she had gotten a lollipop stuck in her hair and cut nearly all of it off trying to get it out. She had a big bald spot for months. I gave up trying to wake her, and I closed my eyes.
I woke up, when I felt soft hands on my hair. I was dreaming of a horse made completely of ice-cream. I rode the horse until it melted and I cried, what a weird dream. I blinked my eyes and rubbed the strange crusty stuff out of them. I took a double take. Laurel was sitting up and grinning, petting my hair. "I'm dreaming?" I asked her. "where's my ice-cream horse?!" laurel just laughed and I knew it was her. I was laurels laugh, high pitch and girly. She had the strangest laugh, I would know it anywhere. "Hey Car-Car! wanna tell me what year it is?" she laughed. I pulled her into a hug and I felt tears slip down my cheeks. "2014, and you are ALIVE!" I yelled happily. This was way better than ice-cream horses! Laurel held me tighter and I felt her wince. "what happened to me?" she questioned me. I pulled back out of the hug and bit my lip. "You were um....." I trailed off. "don't freak out okay?" I said, not wanting her to yell and wake up other patients. She nodded vigorously and I smiled sadly.
"We were running and you... they shot you. in the Side I think, you lost so much blood." I stopped suddenly, laurel was quiet for once, which was a bad sign. "Laurel?" I said cautiously. Her lips quivered and she began to cry. "LAUREL! what's wrong are you hurt?!" I began to reach for the nurse button when she stopped me. "it's worse!" she cried. I just stared at her in horror, I wouldn't lose her, not now. not ever. "IM GOING TO HAVE A HUGE UGLY SCAR AND ALEX WILL BREAK UP WITH ME!" she sobbed. I just stared at her in awe as he cried. I burst out laughing, making her cry more. My face turned red and I gasped for air. I was laughing so hard that tears were running from my eyes. Laurel stopped crying after a while and started giggling at herself. "You..... are...... So...... INSANE!" I laughed. It took a few breaths to calm me down and I looked at her, serious now. "Alex loves you Laurel. once we get him back, he will be grateful you got a scar, trying to save him!" I said to her. Laurel thought that over and smiled happily "I'm a shoulder now!" she said. that started my laughing again "are you trying to say Soldier?" I began to mock her. "Shoulder Laurel reporting for duty, SIR!" I laughed when her face grew red with her anger.
suddenly her faced changed and she looked at me with fear. "Carmen! where's Megan, I remember she.... I saw....." her eyes grew wide and began to brim with tears. "is she..... is-is she..." She couldn't get the words out of her mouth. I quickly spit out "No! Megan is fine! she's just.... missing!" after a few moments I added "I think..." laurel thought for a moment, her blue eyes so filled with wisdom. That's something that she has gained this past year. Laurel is so much more mature now. She's still our innocent Little Laurel Lollipop, but she has definitely changed. "she wouldn't give up on us. She wouldn't believe we were dead until we were 4 feet under." she said happily. I laughed and corrected her, again. "6 feet under, laurel!" after a few moments I calmed down. Laurel was right. I had Faith in Megan, she would come through. Megan was never going to stop fighting, and not even her father could take her down. We had to stay hopeful. I wasn't sure if Megan was alive, I don't know that Alex will live and I don't know if we will see Kyle again. If I learned anything from laurel, it's that you should never loose Faith. So that's what I was going to do. I would wait, and hope that I would see my friends again.
