Jack's POV

"The firs' years Professor McGonagall" Hagrid told a tall stern looking woman in dark green robes. I recognize her of course, we have seen each other occasionally as she works with my guardian. But we have never had a proper conversation before. She is the Head of Gryffindor House the one I want to be in.

"Thank you Hagrid, I will take them from here" she states and he leaves. She then lead us to the entrance hall and it is huge. Then took us to a small empty chamber off the side of the hall. Where the voices of the older students can be heard. "Welcome to Hogwarts" Professor McGonagall said facing us.

"Now in a few moments you will enter the great hall for the start of term feast. But before you are seated you must be sorted into your houses. There are four houses; Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. While you are here your house well be like your family. Your triumphs well earn you points any rule breaking and you will lose points. At the end of the year the house with the most points will win the House Cup" she finished explaining.

"The sorting ceremony will take place shortly in front of the school. So take this time to smarten up" she tells us looking at Neville's croaked cloak. "I will return when we are ready for you, please wait quietly" she states leaving us alone. I watched as Harry tried to flatten his hair as I leaned against the wall. Not bothering to fix my hair.

"How do we get sorted?" Harry asks Ron.

"Some sort of test I think. Fred says it hurts a lot, but I think he was only joking" Ron answers. I rolled my eyes in annoyance, all we had to do was try on the sorting hat. It's not painful at all. Just as I was about to say this a group of ghosts floated into the room through one of the walls. They haven't noticed us as they were in their own conversation about something else.

"Forgive and forget I say, we ought to give him a second chance" one ghost told an other.

"My dear Friar, haven't we given Peeves enough chances? He gives us all a bad name and you he's not even a ghost... I say what are you all doing here?" the other ghosts asks and they finally release we are in the room.

"We're new students" I tell them as no one else spoke.

"About to be sorted I suppose?" the Friar asks and some of us nod our heads. "Hope you're in Hufflepuff, my old house you know" he tells us.

"Move along" a stern voice said announcing Professor McGonagall's return. "The sorting ceremony is about to start, form a line and please follow me" she tells us. I stand next to Harry with Ron behind beside Neville. She then lead us into the great hall where everyone was transfixed by the ceiling. Which is bewitched to look like the night sky.

As we walked to the front of the room where an old hat was on a stool between the student tables and staff table. I heard Hermione telling one of the others about the ceiling being bewitched. Once we reached the stool the hat burst into song.

"Oh you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap" he finishes. I heard Ron complaining to Harry about killing Fred. Professor McGonagall then stood by the hat with a scroll in hand.

"Now when I call your name, you must come forth and I shall place the sorting hat on your head. Who will then tell you which house you belong in" she told us. Then started to call our names out in alphabetical order. Hermione got sorted into Gryffindor which I was happy and surprised about. As she was so smart for a muggle born and I knew she would be the best student in our year level.

When Draco was called the hat pearly touched him before it said Slytherin. He smirked happily as he walked over to their table. It was finally Harry's shot and everyone started to whisper wondering what house he'd be in. After a few minutes the hat said "Gryffindor!" making everyone on that table cheer.

"Jack Potter" McGonagall called and all the students gasped. I rolled my eyes in annoyance at both the students behaviour and McGonagall. I sat on the stoll and she placed the hat on my head.

"An other Potter, difficult to place. However, not as difficult as your older twin brother. Your are smart and cunning the qualities of Ravenclaw & Slytherin. But your bravery out weighs both so it better be Gryffindor!" he finishes with a yell so the whole hall can hear. The Gryffindors cheered while the twins were chanting how they had both Potters. I sat next to Hermione across from Harry while we waited for others to be sorted.

The last kid 'Blaise Zabini' was sorted into Slytherin. Ron was sorted into Gryffindor and sat next to Harry across from Hermione. It was time for Dumbledore to say a few words before the feast began.
