"Dad promise me you won't embarrass me in front of him! And don't make him feel uncomfortable, you know how much he means to me." Olive whined as she went back up the stairs in the foyer of our home.
"Who's coming daddy?" Sean asked as he came down the stairs. I picked him up and swung him onto my hip. I was not looking forward to today at all. Olive had finally decided it was time to have me meet her boyfriend. They had been going steady for about a month now. The boy's name was Landen, who was just a regular boy that Olive met while at a local preppy high school football game.
When Olive first told me about Landen, it worried me that he didn't come from an affluent family because I didn't want her getting used and hurt especially because Olive did have connections that other teenagers would love to have.
"Olive's friend is coming." I patted Sean's hair down because is was starting to stick out in all directions. Speaking of which Sean and Olive had bonded perfectly despite such a large age gap. Olive enjoys his company and loves to take him with her to the park and to the several award shows that we have gone to together.
"Oh, is he going to come play with us?"
I shook my head no, "Not today Sean. Him and Olive are going on a play date." Sean scrunched his nose up and frowned. He was probably upset about how he wasn't invited.
"Oh, then where is h--" Sean was interrupted by someone's gentle knock on the door. The moment I feared had finally arrived. Olive descended down the stairs again with her little purse slung over one shoulder and her phone in the other.
"I'll get it dad!" I managed to open the door before she got to it which upset her a little bit.
A young blond lad clad in a worn denim button up shirt and jeans stood on out porch with a scared look on his face. If I was in his position I would be scared too. I'm surprised he managed to get through all the security system we have here. Olive must've told the guard at the gate to let him in because normally nobody is allowed within a few hundred feet of our home.
"Good morning , son" I said as I held out my hand for him to shake. He quickly took my hand in his and gave it a firm shake.
"G'morning, sir." He smiled nervously. "Olive's told me much about'chu." He had a southern drawl which made him pronounce some words weirdly.
"I hope only good things!" I chuckled as I let go of his hand.
"Okay dad! Now you've met him and let's get going Landen." Olive tried to rush him out the door but I held onto his shoulder. Landen's face went white with panic. Poor boy.
"Hold on. I'd like to get to know him better. I'm sure whatever you guys had planned can wait a couple of minutes."
"Dad!" Olive whined. I laughed a little bit and smiled.
"I'm just kidding, go on. Have fun!"
"I don't like him Daddy." Sean crossed his little arms and glared at the now closed door.
"Why?" I picked him up and rested him on my hip.
"I don't know. He talks funny."
"He has a different accent. Not everyone talks like us."
"Whatever."
