New City, New Me
Kellan's POV
It's been about three weeks since I was released from the hospital. I was told that I'd apparently been jumped by a group of people, my wallet had been missing, so they'd probably just been wanting whatever cash or jewelry I had on me. A couple had been the one to find me on the sidewalk and I'd barely been breathing when the EMT's arrived and took me to the hospital. To save me they put me in a medically induced coma for almost half a year until I was completely recovered and had been actually planning to wake me up the day after I actually had.
The doctor had called my parents after he'd evaluated and explained everything to me and they'd arrived about an hour after the fact with a change of clothes and relieved looks on their faces. I was released two days after I had woken up and when my parents and I had gone back to our home and saw that everything was packed up, I learned that they were moving and that I was going with them. They told me that they thought it was best if we left the place that could possibly bring back bad memories and start fresh.
That fact confused me a bit, because even though I knew they simply didn't want me to remember the bad things, wouldn't it be best for me to stay so that I could remember everything else about my life? But of course, I didn't question the two people that called themselves my 'parents', because they knew best, right? That's what they kept telling me at least.
My mother was about my height, 5'7, with ashy blonde hair and a nicely aged face, barely any wrinkles on her lightly tanned skin. She must use a lot of products. My father had dark hair peppered with grey specks here and there, but his age showed itself clearly on his face, like he stressed himself out about every little thing. I could see that I got my looks mainly from my mother aside from my hair and eye color, both dark like my father's. Seeing this resemblance I didn't really have to wonder whether or not these people that I didn't know whatsoever were my parents.
"Kellan?" I look up and see my Sandra, my mother, standing in my doorway, a strained smile on her face. That was another thing I noticed about these two, they seemed like they were always walking on thin ice whenever they were around me, no matter the situation. Though David, my father, usually just looked emotionless all the time, but I've caught him staring at me with an oddly cold expression on occasion, though I usually just brushed it off.
I get up from the swivel chair, closing my laptop as I stand up and walk over to her, head tilted in curiosity. I don't mention the nervous undertone to her obviously fake smiling face, and ask her what's up. She steps into the room, hands fiddling with one another and looks around, her expression softening as she takes in her surroundings, my new room that I'd just finished unpacking and setting up two days ago.
"It's about you starting school again... we were wondering what you felt about going back, how you would feel about having to start your junior year a little late." Her voice was soft and sweet, something that I liked about her. It was really soothing and I probably fell asleep to her reading to me every night, I'm sure. I just feel like I've listened to her voice a lot once upon a time, so that was my best guess.
"Yeah, I feel like that'd be okay. I've been looking at information from grades nine and ten and it all seems very familiar and I've been able to solve most of the problems with ease. Even some of the grade eleven stuff seems familiar so I don't think it'll be too much of a hassle." She seems relieved as I tell her this, which is what I assumed would be her reaction. She smiled a real smile in return and nodded her head vigorously.
"Th - that's great! It's a private, all boy's Christian school so I'm sure that the environment will be extremely well kept and inviting. I'm sure you will love it!"
