I run as fast as my legs can carry me.
The echoes from the scream bounce between the hallways, causing my ears to ring.
The scream.
Arthur's scream.
It came from the basement.
He must be there.
I change direction and stumble down into the basement. I'm terrified of what I'm about to discover.
"Mitch, Tracey! What's going on?" They are huddled around something. Tracey is crying.
I push them out of my way and see for myself.
The rumors were right all along.
I don't control my tears, allowing them to flow.
There's blood everywhere. On his face, on his hair, on his chest. His cheeks are tear-stained and there's a wound in his side.
I drop to the floor and hug Arthur, careful not to inflict more damage to the wound. He smells like sweat and blood. He moves ever so slightly, signalling for my attention.
"Hey, it's ok. I-I-I'll call for an ambulance. I'll do something, we'll find a way. I-" He puts a finger on my lips and smiles, a smile so sad that I start another crying fit. He opens his mouth to say something.
Out of nowhere, the basement door slams open and a huge thundering figure takes shape.
Arthur's father has decided to join the party.
