~ Edward's POV ~~~>
"Let him go..."
I feel my burning energy being sapped every second I'm in his treacherous grasp. "All of you... (y/n)... get away..." Managing to gasp those words out, I now cannot muster any more.
"Let him go!"
My vision's turning black. I need to hold on-!
Droplets of water just barely escape her tightly shut eyes as her right arm moves to her chest, her hand splayed over her heart. When she opens them, her normally (e/c) eyes have been glazed over by a golden hue.
The aura that had begun to surround her enlarges, forming itself into a sphere around her. In that instant, in that second, the round wall of light expands rapidly.
Passing over Alphonse, the Colonel, and the Lieutenant, the orb appears to maintain its shape. It approaches me, in the claws of Envy.
Preparing myself for the worst, the barrier envelops me.
The dark fog lurking into my sight clears away at once, and strength has once more returned to my limbs.
On the other hand, it doesn't look like Envy's getting a kick out of it.
As soon as the golden light touches his gnarly, green skin, he lets out a roar. The smell of burning flesh reaches my nose, and the sphere implodes, knocking Envy far away.
His grip on me now nonexistent, I fall and tumble towards the ground. Mustering my strength, I manage to glimpse Lust screaming in agony as she too is hit by this strange forcefield of light.
I gather my energy and hold my automail arm out, breaking the fall with it and pushing away, causing me to somersault over and roll onto the ground. Exhausted, I can only pant and stare at the lightened sky while Alphonse attends to me.
My thoughts are all jumbled around- I can't make any sense of it. That light... Unless my eyes played tricks on me, I am near certain (y/n) had summoned it.
But how?
"Brother, are you alright?!" Al's echoing voice is faint when it reaches my ears. I nod slightly, as my brother suddenly turns around. "Huh? (y/n)! What's wrong?"
(y/n)..?
(y/n)-!
Forcing myself to sit up, I cough several times and try to see what happened. Alphonse had left me to gather with Mustang and Hawkeye over the lifeless form of the girl.
(y/n). I need to get to her.
Desperation claws its way into my heart as I struggle to move my sore muscles and joints.
Please be okay.
I feel my back is stooped as I limp slowly over to my comrades.
Her eyes are closed, and her (h/c) hair is scattered about her in waves. She looks paler than normal, with her eyebrows slightly furrowed. Beads of sweat slide down her temples.
"(y/n)," I croak, falling to my knees beside her.
Why? Why do I begin to care again?
I thought I abandoned her. I thought I'd returned to my normal ways of prioritizing only the wellbeing of my brother and I.
So why am I so worried?
~ Your POV ~~~>
I awake in a room I don't recognize. There's a unique smell where I am, but my dazed thoughts prevent me from identifying it.
Wincing at the brightness of the lights above me, I turn and shut them again.
Deeming it safe to try once more after a minute of darkness, I open my lids and sit up, dreadfully slow.
I had been lying on what appears to be a hospital bed; not connected to wires or anything of the sort, though. There's a small beside table to my right, and to my left...
"Hey, you shouldn't be sitting up just yet." The exhaustion of my muscles agree with his voice, and Edward places his automail hand on my back and eases me down.
Ed has changed attire from his torn overcoat and dirtied black jacket into a black tank top. He ditched his braid and went for a ponytail. Bandages are wrapped around his left arm.
And his genuinely concerned face is kind of cute.
"Uhm, thank you." I try to suppress the warming of my cheeks with a small smile. "Anyways, I'm in the hospital, right? How long have I been out?"
Edwards looks down slightly. "It's been two days. (y/n). Do you remember what happened?"
Flashbacks. The last thing is that everything just turned blank.
"Not much," I admit. "Envy caught you..." My voice becomes hoarse, so I clear it uneasily. "And then I remember getting really frightened, and then... determined. That's pretty much it."
We pause, and I can tell he's trying to lighten up the mood a bit when he jokes, "you know, what's most frightening is that you keep getting amnesia." I laugh and lightly punch his arm.
"Thanks, Ed. I can call you that, right?" I dismiss the pink in his cheeks as his merriment. "Uh, yeah. 'Course."
However, the little spark of joy fades when I remember and look at his arm wound. My lips form a frown, and I feel tempted to reach out and touch the injury.
"Oh, are you covering my medical bill?" I ask. He nods, replying, "yeah, but it wasn't that much."
Sighing, I give a wry smile. "I suppose it's time to bid farewell, then." Struggling a bit to get up, I slip out of the thin hospital sheets and land on the solid white floor, cold against my bare feet.
Edward comes out of shock as I near fall to my knees, as he stands abruptly and supports me with his human and automail hands. A warm feeling fills my chest.
"I am completely indebted to you for saving my life. However, as one who cannot protect myself properly, I should not prove as a burden and weigh you down during your journey to regain what you've lost."
That's right. I'll walk away from this place. Stay under the radar. Run from the Homunculi. Subtly, slowly, get clues.
And... I'll do it alone.
After all, why should I be aided and accompanied? With no memories, no past, no identity, and all I can do is trouble others.
I, an insignificant, invisible human, would not be allowed the selfish right to possess but not provide help.
Edward stares into my eyes, his golden orbs reflecting thought and determination. "Wait, (y/n)."
I make a feeble attempt to escape his grasp. "Edward, let go."
He shakes his head.
"Let us help you, (y/n). So you're not alone."
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Okay to be honest I think this needs a little more humor in it. All this book has is determination, despair, disappointment, and romantic touches- which is all fine, don't get me wrong. But sometimes I think it should lighten up.
So the next chapter will be a break- some important stuff in the beginning, yes, but after that I think will be very light.
