"I know she hates us for not letting her go, Fang."
"What do we do?" He asks, his dark eyes studying my face.
"I don't know! Maybe we should just... let her go?" I whisper.
"No. Let her go with the whole flock. Family vacation."
"Okay, yeah, your right."
"I'm always right."
"Ha! You wish!"
He chuckles and pulls me to him. He kisses my forehead gently.
I stand up and get dressed. Fang stretches out his legs and walks out of the room. Probably to get breakfast.

I'm just tying my hair up when Gazzy, his blue eyes wild, says, "She's gone, Max. I checked everywhere!"
"Shit! Now is not the time to go galavanting across the world, Phoenix!" I mutter half to myself.

We search everywhere. She's gone. I go into motherly panic mode and think of all of the places we told her not to go, ever.

"California. She's gone to the most dangerous place."
"Why the Hell would she be there?" Fang asks.
"Because it's the one place, I told her if we ever let her go, to stay away from at all costs."
"So, we are gonna go get her, right?" Iggy asks.
"Of course we're going, Ig! Do you think I'm stupid?"
"No."
"Good, everyone pack up your gear. We're going on a little field trip."

I'm stuffing a bunch of supplies into a backpack when Total, our talking dog (long story we don't have time for) trots in.
"What do you want?" I say.
"To come with you."
"Okay."
"Really? That easy? Wow. Lucky day."
"No, NOT lucky day. Phoenix is in California! The most DANGEROUS PLACE FOR US!"
"Right, um, I'm gonna travel with Angel."
"I don't care right now, to be honest. Just go, okay!"
"Sheesh, okay, okay."
He trots out of the room. I bury my face in my hands and sob. I tried so hard to keep her safe. Now I've failed, miserably. God, I'm such an idiot!

Fang walks in like a shadow. (As always.)
He wraps his arms around me and strokes my hair. I cry into his shoulder and blabber something about being a terrible mom.

"Your not that bad, Max. Your just under a lot of stress right now." He whispers into my hair, "We are going to get her back. Same way we did with Angel. Okay?"
I sniffle. "Okay."
