Camilla and I had picked up Alessa from work to lunch at her favorite restaurant. Our table was outside on the rooftop so we had a gorgeous view and we could enjoy a slight breeze despite the satanic heat California decided to bless us with today.
"Jesus, I'm so full." Alessa whined, sinking into her seat dramatically.
"The cajun chicken was so good." I said, detaching my lips from the straw inside of my glass of lemon punch.
Alessa hummed a muted noise of agreement, as if she lost the ability to speak. Camilla idly sipped from her pink sparkly drink.
An annoying but distant buzz suddenly went off, after realizing it was my phone I quickly reached to grab it from my purse. The caller ID said Imani.
"I'll be right back," I said, excusing myself from the table and walking towards the restroom before picking up.
"Hello?"
''Hey this is Hakeem.'' a gruff male voice spoke. In the background I could make out Imani's voice and another male voice I couldn't quite pin point.
"Oh hey Keem. Is everything okay over there?"
"Yea, everything's fine. um.. Imani wants me to ask if we.... if we should put the soda in the freezer for a bit, cause there's no space in the fridge."
"Oh yeah sure go ahead." I answer a beat later, trying to figure out what the hell I'm hearing on the background. "What are y'all doing? Where is she?"
"Who?"
"Imani," I said, quinting my eyes slightly.
"She's–" Hakeem's voice gets cut off, followed by a hard thump, and the sound of two very deafening laughs.
"On god I'm gonna cut the both of y'all the fuck up if y'all– Johnny!"
"Mani?" I tried, her voice was very close to the speaker just now.
She heaves a sigh and the boys and their cackling slowly faded into the distance.
"Hello? Baby I'm so sorry you had to hear all of that. These clowns are getting on my nerves.'"
"I just wanted to hear her voice damn!" Hakeem's voice pipes in from the background.
"Well she sure as hell doesn't want to hear yours!" Imani bickered back. I couldn't hold in my laugh.
"I'm sorry." She apologized again, as if the two boys were her literal sons. ''They've been testing my patience all day."
"It's alright." I giggled. "Did you need anything? Hakeem called about the refrigirator so I told him to put the drinks in the freezer for a bit."
"Oh okay. We're good though, almost done. I don't see why that idiot had to call you on my phone like he doesn't have your whole number saved on his own."
"I don't think he does actually," I laughed lightly. "Don't remember giving it to him."
"Oh well don't even think about it either. He's a goddamn clown."
