Chapter 9 ~ Cranky Boy
Seth and I got back to the villa at about 5 o’clock in the afternoon. My muscles are sore from swimming all day but I really had fun. Seth is a funny guy and he also got me laughing all day with all his stories and jokes.
Since I was still full from all the pigging out earlier, I told Jessie I will not join her for dinner later. She will just leave some food for me to reheat in case I get hungry.
I decided to take a hot shower and do some sketching afterwards but again, I ended up falling asleep. I was awakened by the grumbling in my stomach. I looked at the clock and it read quarter to midnight. I headed down to the kitchen.
The whole house is dark, illuminated only by the moonlight seeping thru the light curtains. I wished Jessie left some night light on. I managed to reach the kitchen without stumbling into anything.
I crept into the kitchen and turned on the lights. I hoped Seth did not raid our refrigerator and find the food that Jessie kept for me. I saw the food container with my name on it. Yay! Seth did not eat my food. Jessie had to label it in case Seth had any funny ideas.
I proceeded to take out the lasagna and I popped it in the microwave oven. I got back to stand in front of the refrigerator to get some drinks and take out some butter for my toast. I got the orange juice carton and drank straight from there, not bothering to get a glass. I could finish it anyway. Besides, Jessie is not here to scold me. I reasoned out.
That’s what I thought, because a few seconds later, I heard footsteps and I got frozen in my spot. I was only partially hidden by the huge refrigerator door. Uh-oh, I thought. I will hear it from Jessie, again. Here goes.
“Hey, Jess. Why are you still up?” A sleepy voice greeted me. The voice is masculine. It is definitely, not Jessie’s. Nope. But he called me Jessie! Is my butt as big as Jessie’s? I slightly turned to check out my bum. Nope. I don’ think so. My bum is not the same size as Jessie’s.
What should I say? Who is this guy? The voice is not Seth’s either.
“Jessie?” I heard him say again and moving closer to where I was standing.
I was still thinking about what to say or do when I got startled by the microwave oven’s popping sound, signaling that my food is ready. I jumped and almost dropped my carton of orange juice. The guy was also startled with my reaction because he dropped something on the floor. He bent down quickly to pick it up.
I had just a few seconds to take in his appearance. Messy brown hair, disheveled shirt, ripped jeans, Chucks sneakers. I did not realize I was holding my breath until our gaze met.
“Rosie!”, he said. “Dy!”, I said at the same time. His blue eyes looks as surprised as mine. We stood in shock for about a minute. My mouth is slightly open. His mouth is in a tight line.
“When did you…?”, we said again at the same time. We laughed.
“My butt isn’t as big as Jessie’s.” I said, looking hurt.
He laughed again. “I know but I did not see the bum.”
“What’s going on here?”, a sleepy Jessie asked. I did not hear her enter the kitchen. She took one look at me and then to Dylan who had his back turned towards her.
“Dylan! I thought you’ll be here on Saturday.” Jessie said rushing towards Dylan to give him a big hug. She ruffled his hair and he seemed embarrassed.
