Chapter 9;
-Nobody's POV-
Elliot looked down.
"Look honey, I'm sorry. They can't. Because if they investigate and they find out I have Austin and Ally...I'm screwed." Jade said.
"Jade...just let them stay a few nights." Elliot said.
"What if they investigate tomorrow morning?" Jade said.
"They won't. They have to investigate the area around Myrtle's house first, then they go to relatives." Elliot said.
"I'm still scared." Jade said.
"I know." Elliot said as he placed a small kiss on Jade's forehead.
As they walked out of the music room, everyone was looking at them.
As they got back to the kitchen, there was a loud knock on the door.
"Ell...what if it's..." Jade whispered.
Elliot walked to the door and opened it.
"Uhm hi..." Elliot said.
"WHERE'S MY SISTER?!? I NEED TO TALK TO HER." The woman said.
"Jade! Your sister wants you." Elliot said.
"Ok!" Jade said from the kitchen.
"Alright...I need all of you to hide in the laundry room. Dani, Alex, you're in charge. I don't want one peep coming out of you guys." Jade whispered.
The children scurried into the laundry room, closing the door quietly and locking it.
"Who's here, Ell?" Jade said.
She looked up. All her childhood memories came rushing back to her.
"...Myrtle..." She mumbled.
"Nice to see you too, Jade." Myrtle said, a little edge hidden in her voice.
"Wait; how do you know our address?" Elliot asked.
"Yellow Pages...and I need to ask my sister a question...so please; leave. Now." Myrtle said.
Elliot left. Jade led Myrtle into the kitchen.
"Please. Take a seat." Jade said.
Myrtle sat. And broke down into tears.
"I don't know what to do...!?!" Myrtle said.
"Austin and Ally...they were good kids. They were. I just realized what I've been doing wrong. Everything." Myrtle said.
Jade nodded and looked at the laundry room door.
"I need those two. But I don't even know where they are!" Myrtle said.
Not another word was said.
"Maybe...you've seen them...Jade?" Myrtle said as she was pulling out 2 pictures out of her purse.
Jade looked at the pictures. One was a picture of Ally and her mom and dad, she looked really happy. The other one was a picture of Austin and his siblings. Each one of them had an arrow pointing to all four children with their names handwritten underneath. Their names read; Aaron Moon, Ariana Moon, Amanda Moon, and of course, Austin Moon. All 4 of them full of happiness.
"Well?" Myrtle said.
"...um...no. And do you know what happened to Austin's siblings?" Jade said.
"...they...uhm...got separated...Aaron went to another foster home and Ariana and Amanda went to a foster home for girls...and Austin got sent to my foster home..." Myrtle said.
All the children in the laundry room heard it. Then looked at Austin.
"Austin..." Ally whispered, embracing him in a long hug.
"I'm so sorry..." Calum said.
"...mmhmm...& what happened to Ally's family...?" Jade asked.
"...Ally...oh Ally...she had an older sister...oh what was her name...Dove! She uhm...died of..." Myrtle's voice trailed off.
"She died of what...?" Jade said.
"...leukemia..." Myrtle whispered.
Jade looked down.
"And her parents...?" Jade asked.
"They uhm...committed..." She said. Then started whispering. "...suicide..."
"How?" Jade asked.
"They brought Ally to my foster home...they gave me her birth certificate and other important documents that were for her. And inside a folder was a suicide note. It read,
'Myrtle, take good care of our Ally. She's a really good girl. And we're just so depressed...after what happened to her older sister, Dove. It's really hard for us. And I don't want Ally to see what Penny and I are gonna do tonight...we're ending our lives. We can't handle this anymore. We love Ally to death but I can't believe we're doing this whole foster care...
Sincerely; Lester and Penny Dawson' and that's what the note said." Myrtle said, beginning to cry a little.
"You know it by heart...?" Jade said.
"Yes...it just saddens me enough to make me memorize it." Myrtle said.
In the laundry room, all the kids were starting to fall asleep.
"Ally..." Alex whispered. "Oh my god." Dani whispered.
Ally turned over an empty garbage can quietly and sat on it.
Austin wrapped her arms around her.
"And this is why we always have each other's back." Austin said.
"Look...I gotta go..." Myrtle said.
"If you see them...give me a call...here's my number." Myrtle said, handing her sister a business card.
Jade led Myrtle to the front door.
And Myrtle collapsed into Jade's arms, giving her a long hug.
"It's been a while, sis." Myrtle said.
"...I missed you, Myrtle..." Jade said.
And Myrtle left. And Jade felt lonely again. Elliot came down and Jade ran to him and hugged him tightly.
The kids came out of the laundry room, crowding around Jade and Elliot. A group hug. But Austin and Ally didn't join because they didn't feel loved anymore...they felt something else...sudden pangs of loneliness.
