It was Maya who stood by the door, eyes wide open, filled with shock. If she told dad about this, i'm pretty sure he would explode at both of us. But I could stop her.
We sat up from our positions.
"Uh, Maya." I tried to give her an innocent smile. "It's not what you think. Really." I approached her lightly as I could, wishing I could convince her. She just stared at me.
"Look." I put my hands at her shoulders, staring straight into her greyish eyes.
"It was all a misunderstanding. We were just talking. I promise." I put my hand across my chest, over my heart. It was how I showed people that I was sincere with what I was saying to them, and Maya knew that, since she spent six years serving our family. She became a Flourencia a long time ago. We shared so many secrets and stories. Now she was 31.
"Please don't tell dad. I'm begging you Maya please." She sighed deeply, trying to decide what to do or think.
"Okay. I won't tell your father." She gave me a nod after that. I gave her a smile showing her my gratitude.
"Thank you thank you!" I said cheerfully shaking her.
"Just don't surprise me again by seeing both of you in bed." We both giggled at what she said. She pinched my cheek and went downstairs. I turned back to Harry to see him grinning at me. He seemed amused at what had just happened. Almost getting caught and killed by my father entertained him. He must be out of his mind.
"What?" I asked. He lifted up his hands and shook his head.
"Nothing." I tilted my head slightly solving him. He confused me sometimes.
"Crickette!" I heard my father's voice from downstairs. His voice gave me a hint that he was getting impatient. I didn't want him to be eating dinner with his temper. It wouldn't be right. I remember when Afriel had his 16th birthday and accidentally broke our car's window. He was playing with a baseball bat with a few of his peers. He broke the glass when he swung backwards, picking up momentum as he imagined he was going to strike a ball. Father's face was so red he swore to Afriel that he would never buy him his own car until he gets a proper job after college. He didn't talk the whole dinner after we sang Afriel happy birthday. I didn't want to experience that, not yet and not ever.
"I have to go." I said to Harry looking at the door behind me.
"Then go. Don't keep him waiting." With that I rushed downstairs. The living room was empty. The scene outside the windows had gone darker. Night was approaching. I didn't notice that I stayed that long with Harry. It seemed like only minutes had gone by and those minutes were heavenly that I forgot them.
"Yes?" I said a bit panting over hurrying.
"You seem exhausted." Hunter said kidding me.
" This is just from running downstairs." I said waving him off still panting. I turned to my father waiting for him to tell me why he called me here.
" Crickette. We'll be leaving for tonight to meet a few people. Your brother and his girl went to a club. I'm not sure we'll be coming early tonight for dinner. So it will only be three of you." Here we go again, they're leaving us. They always had to leave me alone. Atleast Hunter's here, and Harry. Great. I'm not sure i'll be able to sleep.
"Again?" I wanted to argue with them, even though I knew in the end that I won't win.
"Sorry, honey." Mom said standing up and gave me a long hug. "It's gonna be alright because Callen's here and we know that he can protect you. Just stay in the house please." She ran her fingers through my hair and kissed my temple.
