Luke held the picture next to me and the picture had him in it.... and me as well. Wait what?!
"What the hell? How am I in there?" I grabbed the photo from him and examined it carefully, "This is impossible, Mrs. Kydd. I barely even know your son. It has only been a few weeks since I've known him."
She eyed me from head to toe and finally, after a moment of silence, spoke up, "I don't recall Mrs. Hastings having twins so I guarantee that that girl in the photo is you, not someone who looks exactly like you. I know that in this world it's possible to look almost like someone, but not that detailed. It has to be you in that photo."
"This is outrageous. I'm not Mrs. Hatings' daughter, for your information. I'm--"
"Mrs. Dawson's daughter," she interrupted me in a way that felt like she was mocking me, "But do you really think so? Didn't I mention something about an accident awhile ago?"
"Mom, that can't be her. You told me Melissa--" His mom interrupted her before he could continue.
"That's because I thought she died, okay? Honey, ever since that accident, I hardly spoke about the Hastings. It was kind of rude."
"If that's me," I stood up from the sofa, "Then how did I end up with my 'other' parents and not those, Hastings?"
"You're not listening at all. We all thought you died because in that accident, we never found you." What? How could they not find me but they could find Luke? "That's just stupid. It sounds fake."
"I wish I could go with what you're saying right now but you can't even remember what happened before you became 'Jane Dawson'. I don't blame you for losing your memories because apparently my son lost his too."
I looked at Luke sympathetically, "Luke, do you really not remember much about what happened?"
"All I remember is that I fell in love with this girl. Let me make it detailed since saying just that won't quite put it." He patted the sofa, gesturing me to sit down right next to him so I did.
"We were together for quite a long time starting from our first year high school I think. I don't remember." He looked so hurt that it was hurting me as well.
"Anyways, we were at the car together and we just got into an accident. But the accident was pretty dangerous, so dangerous that I lost my memories. Mom helped me know her name and a few things I did with her." I sat down with him and looked back at the photo, "That's it?"
"Yes, that's it Jane. I don't know anything else." I sort of got confused though. He could've at least noticed my face, right?
"But, why didn't you notice me?"
"Because that's one of the memories I have lost. I told you, it was so dangerous. I even forgot how Melissa looked like. This photo," He took another photo from the container, "from what I remember is our first date."
I took the photo from him and saw a beautiful beach. A girl and a guy, which happened to be Luke and me, walking and talking while holding hands. We, I mean, they looked so happy. I can't believe Luke had to go through all that. I can't believe I'm close to believing that that girl who went through the same thing as he did was and is me.
How could that be me? It sounds hilarious that I actually had a life before I became 'Jane Dawson'. That sounds even more stupid when you think about it. 'A life before I became 'Jane Dawson' sounds like in the movies. Oh scratch that, Jane. You're in the middle of a bad and suspicious situation here.
"You are highly convinced that that girl is me, correct?" I asked Mrs. Kydd. "Yes I do, Melissa." I so want to get mad at her right now, but as a person with manners, obviously I can't, "Please don't call me that."
